HMF Exhaust Question
I was reading some older posts at AdvRider and Todd had posted that the HMF has "special fasteners" that require you to send the pipe to HMF every time it needs a re-pack.
Can anyone confirm this?

Can anyone confirm this?
I looked into all the exhaust offerings pretty hard before I made my decision, and HMF was just completing thier design for the KLX250S. It was a 2 month wait; and i don't Think soooo! Looks to be a pretty good slip on and thier web site is pretty informative (great instructions on the carb mods). But having to send it back for repacking would be a major turn-off (expense) for me.
Well instead of making a guess, I contacted HMF and they pointed me here.
Heck, for $20, I'm sending my HMF back to them.
First off, you would be a FOOL to not take advantage of the HMF muffler re packing service.
For a measley $20 + return freight you get:
R&R OF YOUR MUFFLER.
NEW PACKING.
NEW HMF EMBLEM.
INSPECTION OF THE CORE AND INLET.
RE BUFF OF THE BODY (ALUMINUM FINISHES ONLY)
RE BUFF IF THE INLET/S BEND.
UPDATED END CAP ASSEMBLY (IF YOURS IS THE OLD SMALL SCREW VERSION)
WE EAT THE LABOR.
BUT, there are those that either cannot send in the muffler OR just want to do it themself.
There is ONE STIPULATION:
IF you re pack the muffler yourself.
To keep your HMF WARRANTY you MUST use the STAINLESS STEEL RIVETS WE OFFER when re assembling, failure to not use the STAINLESS STEEL RIVETS WE OFFER will VOID YOUR HMF WARRANTY. Use of ALUMINUM or STEEL RIVETS will NOT WORK and WILL VOID YOUR HMF WARRANTY.
NOTE: STAINLESS STEEL RIVETS WE OFFER typically CANNOT be "popped" with a standard hand rivet gun, you WILL NEED AN AIR RIVETER.
REPEAT !!! YOU WILL NEED AN AIR RIVETER TO POP THE STAINLESS STEEL RIVETS A HAND RIVETER WILL NOT WORK. GOT IT ?
HMF MUFFLER PACKING TUROTIAL
Q) How do I know I need to re pack the muffler?
A) IF you introduce water or mud into the muffler/packing you will need to re pack more often.
A) IF you do not recalibrate the air fuel ratio, internal exhaust temperatures climb to higher than normal levels, the packing will burn out.
A) You notice that performance and or sound levels are getting worse.
A) You tap along the muffler body and it sounds hollow instead of solid.
Q) Can I put just any packing in there?
A) WE suggest that you do not. We use a special high temperature material sewn into a pillow. This design reduces the “blow out†that you will get with normal fiberglass packing.
Q) What does the packing do?
A) Muffler packing is used to dampen the exhaust sound wave.
A) Muffler packing is the insulator for the muffler shell, without the packing the aluminum shell would not stand a chance to the heat and exhaust pulse wave.
A) The packing also serves to keep the core from rattling in the muffler body.
Work safe, this procedure requires you to put your hands in tight places, make sure the engine, exhaust system and surrounding areas are cold before starting the removal process.
Make sure you secure the machine in such a way that it cannot be moved or started until you have completed your work.
BEFORE start up, make sure that the exhaust system/slip on (headpipe (s), s-bend (s), muffler (s) are clear of any plastic, electrical, fuel, control cables, hydraulic lines or anything else that high heat of the exhaust system can damage.
*ALWAYS refer to your FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL for specifications, procedures, or for any other information not provided here.
**Remove the outlet tip.
** Remove the muffler from the machine.
**Throughly clean the muffler.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

Thanks for the info, Marty.
I don't know if I'd want to be sending one via MPS(had too many things get lost) and sending it though the Japanese system would be expensive, but as long as I bring it somwhere with an air riveter there should be no problem.
Glad to hear that the 'special fasteners' were nothing more than stainless steel rivets.
