I also put the end that attaches to the handlebars, into a vise and tweaked that end a little to bring the whole guard in, so that it sat correctly.

I received a response back from HDB - the location of the inner clamp on my bar is OK. At least I can proceed.

Thanks for those photos! You really chopped that clutch lever, lol! Loving the blacked out kit, I didn't notice that option when I ordered mine. So indeed, cutting the overall length of your handlebar made a big difference. Having the go-ahead from both HDB and ProTaper on the inner clamp placement, I'll finish up this project and post up some photos.
