HELP! 2009 KLX oil pouring out of case & smoking from case!
I'm glad you got it sorted out. You should have a lot of fun on this bike. They are generally very reliable and forgiving.
A word of caution on the tall bars... you may need to extend a cable or two. I put KX high bend bars (which are not super tall) and my clutch cable is maxed out.

**THIS** is why I do not ever ever ever bring my bike to any shops. Sure, there are good ones, but I don't trust anyone to work on my motor toys.
I'd rather read a manual, lose some blood, cry a bit, and get it myself. And KNOW it's done correctly. This is why I bought a new motor instead of sending my case out to get repaired!
Good luck man
Texas Flyer, I'm not trying to defend the PO on your bike, but I'm not sure that the blown seal we're referring to here would have operated properly for the mileage you drove and then let go. This seal would probably fail, fail in a relatively big way, and stay failed. I can't see the seal "fixing itself" to some degree, the owner dumping the bike on you, and then the seal failing again. Gaskets and such can do the "slow bleed" and then let go, but seals usually die quite slowly over time or go big all at once. It is possible that the PO didn't know this was happening or going to happen...or maybe he did. Maybe only a lie detector could verify it.
The waterpump seal is a more common failure than this particular oil seal, so this is somewhat unusual.

Present the bill to him, demand 100% and settle for 50%. Threaten small claims court, with the additional lost wages cost, if he won't give you anything. If he calls your bluff then walk away, likely not worth the actual fight at small claims court.
Ask the tech that fixed your bike if, in his opinion, the failure was present when you bought. Just one more "vote" to throw on the seller.

Had a message from the dealer I left the bike with. Bottom line is $380 bucks to get her fixed back to proper running order.
Will call Thursday to get the details since my work schedule may not permit me to get details tomorrow. I am told they have a couple things that must be replaced along with the blown seals. All which was affected from a combo of overheating, excessive pressure in the case, and loss of oil and contaninated oil circulation for an extended period of time (maybe my couple hours of riding without knowing?).
The bad new is, $380.
The good news is $30. The voice mail sounded like a lot of issues and I was worried I'd be doing a whole top end and bottom end job when all was said and done. So for that price, it can't be all that bad since I am certain most of it is labor at $55/hour if I remember the sign correctly.
This means my $3,100 2009 KLX now cost $3,500. I guess $3,500 with the FMF Power Bomb exhaust and FMF pipe and 40% on the front tire and 20% on the back tire left is still reasonable. That's probably what the retial figure on the bike is anyway.
Yeah, so I am trying to justify it in my mind to avoid confrontation with prior owner. It's probably best to let the $380 bucks go as just bad luck. If the bike runs like a champ once I have it back the smile on my face will help me forget the seller may have an integrity issue.
I did buy the 110mm rise Jimmy Button Rentahl bars and a 13 tooth front sprocket with hard Renthal grips and fold away MSR mirror for another $125 bucks to finish off the bike. So now I am at $3,600 for a solid machine. And I'll keep fingers crossed I don't need longer cables for those tall bars.
I was told the smog removal is easy so I will research that as well, although I was told it really makes no difference in power. It'd still be nice to get that crap off the bike.
I wil also be researching tires since in 500 miles I will clearly need some new ones.
Plus I still would love to get a 3 gallon or slightly larger tank. From what I hear though, no one makes a tank that does not requre the removal of the radiator fan from what I been reading. I do not want to remove any cooling system parts since I ride in Southern Arizona and South Texas.
Hopefully by the end of the week, I am smiling and riding again since I'd like to use this bike to commute to work and then go exploring trails on my days off.
Oh, and if anyone lives around Phoenix and wants to trade my mint condition red plastics for their green, that would rock. I prefer the green plastic!

Glad to hear you are heading back on the right track with the bike. You sound like me, I hate confrontation, and remember prisons are full of people that just wanted to talk to someone that ripped them off. Not worth it. Tires......Go with the Dunlop 606 if you ride more off road than on, and the Kenda K270 if you split it in half between road and dirt. I got over 5000 miles on a rear Kenda, and its still hanging on the wall with 50% tread.
