Default Heat Shield Ideas

In the "Break from Deej" thread, Deej suggests roughing up a chrome Universal heat shield and painting it with high temp paint. I started this response, and then realized I was jacking the thread, so I copied it here and began this post.

To Deej:
I imagine that [rough up the chrome & painting] would work out pretty well. I would go to town on it with a bench grinder and just take most or all of the chrome right off. Then, like you said, coat it nicely with a good high temp paint. Actually, I guess the "leg" side of the heat shield does not get ridiculously hot anyway, so you might not even need the super high heat paint.

On a related note, where did you get the heat shield? I am about to install my Muzzy (it arrived today ), and I was thinking about:

(a) tack welding nuts onto the header so I can use the OEM heatshield
(b) fabbing up a couple of hoseclamps around the header with nuts attached to them. The thought would be to have nuts somehow welded to or passing through the clamps and then bolt the OEM heat shield to that.
(c) buying an aftermarket heat shield

I really like the looks of the OEM shield, so I would like to use that. Has anyone worked out a permanent way to use the OEM shield. I have seen at least one temp setup, but I want something a little more polished looking.

Thanks,
Chris

Here's one idea - I don't know if it will work or not. If you don't have access to a welder, you could use JB weld and glue a couple of nuts on the pipe to line up with the stock heat shield mounting holes, then bolt it on. If I recall, JB weld is good for around 500 F. I used an IR non-contact thermometer and measured 300 to 400 degrees on the header pipe. I don't know whether it would work or not, but it sounds reasonable that it might. The downside is that if it doesn't, you'll be filing off the JB weld and possible mar up your head pipe. So ... I have not tried this, I don't know if JB weld would hold up to those temps or not - so do this at your own risk, this is just a crazy idea.

If you have access to a welder, I one ought to be able to tack weld a couple of nuts instead of using something like JB weld. The weld doesn't have to be that strong - just holding on that light shield wouldn't take too much.

Yeah, Brian, I thought about the JB weld stuff, but I have never used it. I was a little worried that, in the worst case, I might be driving along and lose the heat shield. Bad for me, really bad for whoever is driving behind me. Doh!

I will probably find a local weld shop to just pop a few nuts on there and call it a day.

Sounds like a safe bet. I think Deej was planning something similar. Be sure and let us know how it works out or if you come up with any other ideas.

Unless you fall down and hit somethin.

Sorry Nobrakes I couldn't resist hope you heal fast and are back up on two wheels soon.

I just googled JB Weld and their website states Not recommended for use on manifolds, exhaust systems, and other engine components which normally operate at temperatures above 500° F.

I think a tack weld may be the only solution.

Yea I was going to see if the shop could do the weld for the stock heat shield, but I saw the chrome one in the shop and decided to try it, and it was only $18.00 so no biggie if I decide to change it out. Here is the picture of the one I bought in case we decide to keep this open for heat shield discussions. Later all.

Regular JB weld should be fine on the header. I tried to cheat and used JB Quick and while its holding for now its starting to turn to powder from the heat. I threw out the package but I think the JB quick is only good for up to 300 degrees or so. I had to put two of the mounting tabs back on my 300 head pipe to mount the stock heat shield. Somehow two of the tabs were broken off. I've got a basic flux cored wire fed welder but not sure if its adjustable enough (high heat and low heat) to put the tabs back on without going through the headpipe.

Yeah, that'd be the main thing I'd be concerned about if welding - going all the way through and ruining the pipe. I certainly wouldn't trust myself to do it, but I've only welded a couple of times. I'd be looking for someone with some better welding skills than I.

Do you have a part number for that heat shield?
