Default Front End Squealing

Hi all,

recently I’ve noticed a squealing coming from the front end of my ‘19 KLX250. Haven’t really looked into it much since I don’t know a whole lot about bikes. Just figured I’d ask if anybody had the same problem, as my brother has the ‘20 version and the same thing happened to his.

both bikes are basically all stock, if that makes any difference.

thanks

Does the squealing change when you use the front brake?

I don’t think so. Although I would assume it will likely end up having to do with the brake.

Seems to only happen in first or second gear while putting around...but I guess it wouldn’t be loud enough to hear while going at a decent speed.

When you apply the brake, does the squealing stop or get louder?

This is like a game of 20 Questions.

I'd say start with the lowest cost first - pull the pads and sand them a bit with some coarse sand paper or emery cloth. The squeal is likely brake pad chatter, it is usually caused by dirt.and/or glazing of the pad. If it works all is good. Some times it is good to clean the swept area of the rotor with some fine emery cloth.

Another thing to look at.... if it isn't the brakes, the speedo sensor on the front wheel will sometimes make a whining noise. It isn't a squeak... but it very noticeable when it does it. I usually pull the front wheel and pack the sensor housing with grease.

I just remembered one other noise maker - the whir when braking, the holes of the rotor scraping the slotted/drilled disc. Not a problem for sure, but noise none the less.

I had a similar squealing noise going on last summer. Only noticeable at low speeds (maybe because other noises covered it up at higher speeds?). Mine was fixed by pulling the axle, and reinstalling everything with new grease including the speed sensor.

There ya go. A few low cost/no cost things to do to see if it solves the problem.
