Default Free or cheap mods questions

My wife has a KLX250S. I would like to know what is the stock gearing (sprockets) and what is the best cheap gearing change to get some more power? Also don't want to lose the top end completely by doing it[X(]. Also, what are the FREE mods that you can do to this bike? She is not aggressive but when I ride her bike it seems 1st gear is a little high?? and she seems to have trouble riding real slow as it starts to jerk right before it dies. She is re-learning how to ride and is doing quite well but I want to give here all the benefits that I can. I keep telling her that going too slow will get you more crashes that giving it some gas and...well you know.
Thanks,
db

Going with a 13t front sprocket does wonders. Much easier to stay in the proper rpms for this bike. It feels stronger all over with the 13 instead of the stock 14.

I'll second that, stock is 14/42. I'm running 13/42 and it is stronger everywhere but it did limit my top speed. I don't run above 75 with the 13/42, just way too buzzy. With 14/42 75 was bearable but it wasn't all that quick getting there.

Sounds easy enough. Stay with the same chain too as a bonus. So whats the top end on a stock 250S with the 13t front sprocket?
Thanks,
db

I see you answered the top speed question as I was replying. As long as the bike does 65 mph without blowing up I will be happy.
Thanks,
db

best place to buy the sprocket? 514XK-13 from Sprocket Specialists or somewhere else? Also, the 514XK-13 looks like it is for a KLX 650 and the sprocket listed for the 250S is a 524-13 (but only thru 1996). And all the pictures of the above sprockets are missing on the web site so does that mean they are out of stock?

I found this place to be a good resource for checking gear ratios:

I wouldn't trade my 13-45 setup for all the other mods in the world. I did the 13 as the first mod. But quickly realized that having the ability to go real slow with lots of low end power on the trails by far out weighed the top speed this thing would do. When I had the Muzzy installed along with the jetting done I also had the shop throw on a 45 rear gear and a new chain. Of course Muzzy is only one option, there are some other equally fine pipes out there. I can comfortably do 60-65 in 6th gear and the bike doesn't sound like its going to fly apart.

Deej: Sprocket brands to consider? I have been looking at Moose, JT, Sprocket Specialists, etc..Is one better than another or all made by the same manufacturer? I don't want to spend $25 thinking I am getting a better sprocket when its the same as the $15 one.
don't forget to remove her butt plug....lol
I already read about that
Thanks,
db

All this talk about keeping the chain or replacing it has me wondering. Can't you just pop the matser link off and add/remove a link or two as necessary? I know I used to do it back in my younger days.
