The 13 tooth tho cheaper wears quicker due to the chain having to go round a tighter curve, I imagine it also wears the chain quicker. I think from reading everything I have read that a 14 / 45 combo will be as good as it gets, however I'm not sure if you need a new chain to do this. If you do of course its more expense.
The KLX300 front sprocket is different to the KLX250 and I don't know if it will work, however the rear sprocket bolts onto the same hub as the 300 so perhaps the 46 tooth optional rear sprocket (50t standard) off the 300 is a good compromise.

P.S. The 300 runs a 110 link chain as against the 250's 106 so I guess you need a new chain to run the bigger rear sprocket ... unless the 300's swingarm is longer. lol

OK, so I should haver read the rest of this thread first. 14/45 is a good start?

the shop sold me a 13 front sproket that was listed for a KLX300 (they had no listing for the 2006 KLX250s sprockets), think it will fit to try the 13/42?
At first glance it looks different.
The KLX300 front sprocket will NOT fit the KLX250S. There's a bunch of good info on which sprockets will fit in this forum. Also, to go with the 14/45 you will need a longer chain. The stock chain works with 14/42 (stock) and 13/42.

I've only got 1K miles on my 13/42 but no visable wear yet on the front teeth.

also, did you buy the sproket on the net or at the dealer?

I think I'm going to go back to stock for now. Even though others swear by alternate gearing, I find the stock gearing works well for me. I don't seem to have the problems with acceleration in the higher gears that others have reported, and I think the gearing is a bit too short with the 14/49. 13/42 would probably be OK, but I guess I don't really have any beef with the 14/42.

One thing I did really like about the 14/49 was the lower range first gear for the slow technical stuff. I especially found it much easier to lift the front end, for example, to clear logs and what not. But I just can't give up the longer gearing for the road. This bike is a dual sport, afterall, and with 14/49 it was like losing 6th gear.

I realize 13/42 is about halfway between stock and 14/49, and I may try it at some point since I already have the 13 tooh front gear, but right now I just want my stock gearing back. Call me crazy.

I got my chain and sprocket online.

Some people are reporting more chain noise when they installed 13t sprocket.I installed the 13t and I did not notice any more noise than normal. Just wondering what everybody else is experiencing?

That actually depends on what sprocket you get just to compare two companys. AFAM 24502 has tapered teeth and doesn't have any extra noticable noise. On the other hand Sprocket Specialists 562 is not tapered and makes a bit of noise. I tryed them both before settling on the AFAM.

Get a Muzzy, you won't hear heardly any chain noise after that except when deaccelerating or when the clutch is pulled in.

I have a Talon rear sprocket that is undercut below the teeth. The front sprocket is pretty much normal. I didn't notice much difference in chain noise. I'm also running a NON O-ring chain. Maybe it runs a little quieter.

Hmm fair enuff someone else reported accelerated wear so I took that to be right

The AFAM 24502 seems to be listed for a 650 size engine. Does it also fit the KLX250s?

Yes AFAM 24502 is the correct C/S sprocket.
