The one by Trailtech, the same type that's in their Vapor instrument panel, is mounted in the proper hose to detect exact water temp digitally. You know if your engine is warmed up enough to really start leaning on it, and it also lets you see temp as it builds so you know how close you're getting to an overheat...before just a dumb light or a boilover occurs. My KLR600/650's had an analog guage, but it was a bit vague and not that great. The digital temp readout in my Vapor has been an extremely useful tool on seeing heat is building and then how it's being dealt with under any operating conditions.
The Trailtec ones are pretty cheap and look pretty easy to install. found this on eBay (AU eBay though so probably cheaper from the states).

My truck has an outside temp gauge and i love it. My buddys BMW 1200GS has the same thing and its nice. I like to know what temp it is.... wish my bikes had it.
"what is the purpose of an external temperture gauge on a motorcycle"
Just for my own knowledge, I like to know what the normal/average temp is, then if something goes amiss I can see if the temp is going high, in addition to the temp light. Again just like to know.
Thanks

LOL!...Oh...he was actually talking about an ambient air thermometer. I've seen the ambient air temp on my KLX in my Vapor unit to be about useless. Even with the engine off and the bike just sitting with the engine cold, it seems the ambient temp readout is always falsely high if the sun is shining. When the bike is running, the readout is always way high. In our cars and trucks that have ambient temp sensors, it seems the sensor can be located to give a decent air temp without too much effect from body panel heat in the sun or engine heat. Our motorcycles are small enough that the sensor doesn't have many places to hide to provide a good readout.
I think there was some confusion on this thread. Who cares what the temp is outside, I think he's talking about engine temp. Although I have both on the ST 1300, and its nice to keep an eye on things as you ride, especially when getting close to freezing or over 100.
