Lightbulb The expanding fuel tank.

I know this doesn't apply to the stock steel tank but even so, has anyone tried this?

A guy over on the ADV site poured hot water into his fuel tank and the pressurised it with a bicycle pump.
Let it cool down and it now holds 2 liters more.
His was a DRZ250.

At first I though it was a stupid idea, but the more I think about it, the more it seems like a viable option.

Could this be done with the Clarke or IMS tanks?

Maybe.
But if you left it fitted and then did it?

I can see the shrouds being a potential issue.
The DRZ doesn't have shrouds.

It is possible. The problem lies beyond after the expension, when you have the need to remove the tank. And other problems like the fitting warpping could happen.

On a tank that sits over a backbone style frame (like my old XR) it could work as the expansion is most likey going to happen on the big flat sides. On a perimeter style frame (klx) the tank has to fit snugly in between the frame tubes. Room for cable and wire routing may be an issue if you filled all the space. Doing it with it installed, I'd be concerned it would form fit and not come off Try it and let us know

For fuel tank work, I rinse out the gas with Kerosene, then rinse that out with alcohol, then flush it out with water. I don't think the hot water will cause the gas to explode, so smoke while you're doing it if you like danger.
