From what I hear, if that noise is coming from the cam drive area quit riding that bike NOW!

The cam chain tensioner sounds totally crapped out and if it is bad enough - and I don't remember ever hearing a 250 that loud - that it is possible it could jump time and introduce your valves to the piston. Not a good thing.

I do make the part to fix it, but the guys here know I won't tell someone to fix something that ain't broke. Yours is broke if that noise is in the cam drive.

If it is possible from here, email me. If not, PM me to get information on the kit and the price. I would need to know what country you are in.

Mark, videos for trying to detect audio quality ain't always the best, but it sure sounded like a lot of them I've heard in the cam tensioner department. On how bad they can be, mine was loud...very loud. I even had to replace the cam chain when I did my 300 cylinder. Before that it was the proverbial 5-gal steel bucket full of ball bearings.

Maybe so, but if there's too much play they can jump time. Knowing what I know now if the noise is too loud that means the tensioner is pushing in easily 1/4-3/4" allowing that kind of play in the chain, if it hits right the chain can jump a tooth at the crank. If it would have been the lighter rattling heard in other audio, no problem saying it could be run while waiting to get a kit, and I have told riders they can still go ride.

Too much play can result in broken parts, expensive ones. I had a rider buy a 300 with a broken cam chain and trashed top end, rebuilt the top end and used the stock damaged tensioner, rode for a while and broke another chain - taking out the valves and piston again. This time he did the manual tensioner, no problems. I have read of another 300 jumping time and doing it too. Some of the KLX650 guys in the Yahoo KLX650 Group have done the same.

I wouldn't the risk if it is that loud and coming from the cam drive and I wouldn't recommend doing so to others. Why spin the cylinder and click the trigger?

What's wrong with a little Russian roulette?...live dangerously!

No...my cam chain issue was before you came up with the manual setup. The new chain during the cylinder swap quieted everything down, but we know it was just a matter of time before that chain started going downhill...or worse results.

Yes...cam chain/timing disaster isn't pretty.

Of course it was before the tensioner... You have #1, the prototype. I definitely appreciated working with you on it. That was really a fun job, not as easy as all the others before and after. Especially now that both my brother and I have KLX250s.

In another topic, I am still jealous of you and your southern cohorts. It's now dropping below freezing here, 40 degrees at noon. And my shed still isn't finished. Now to go work on finishing insulation and figuring out electrics and heating...

Yeah, the temp swings between us are weird. We're actually entering our salad days of dirt riding. I'll be headed off to the Big Bend area for a little over two weeks of riding and camping in the desert right after Thanksgiving. Can't wait.

Ok. Thanks you guys. I was a bit spooked by klx678's message about my bike going to crap, especially after I just finished a big ride with it.

I don't speak mechanic haha, how do I fix this?

Just give this guy a call- Krieger Cam Chain Tensioners
I think that Mark is just trying to let you know that if the cam chain is the source of the noise, catastrophic damage to valvetrain can happen if it jumps time because the chain is loose.
