engine swap
so i know some are gonna think this is a horrible idea, but has anyone thought of putting a motor out of a kx 250 in their bike? just a crazy idea, but if i found one for cheap enough, i think i have enough free time, and not to mention a full service shop at my disposal, its doable
I think it is a great idea. 2 or 4 stroke, It will give our little KLX so serious cajonees. I'd consider it in a heartbeat if i had a motor. when i ride my 1988 honda 4trax 250R (now 300) i dream about this potent 2 stroke motor in my klx. It put down 55hp at the rear wheels on a dyno at Trinity Motorsports. And yes it will loft the front end in all 6 gears.
An E-ticket ride for sure

Cool idea! Id love to have a 2 stroke in my klx. Ive actually been reading info from people that have street legal 2 strokes (ktm's & huskys) just because Id like to have one too! I love the hit of the 2 stroke power band.
If you get the chance please post and pic every move you make!

Sounds like a waste of a KLX & a KX. If you buy a KX just ride it as because everything else about it will be an upgrade too.
If you want street legal take the license plate off the fender of your KLX & put it on the KX. They are both green 250cc Kawasaki models with a K & X in them just like your registration says. You would have to **** someone off pretty royally for them to check the VIN on the registration vs the frame. (note last paragraph was somewhat tongue in cheek, first was not).

Anyone who's done a project like this knows the pitfalls. It's nothing like taking a '57 Chevy and putting a big block 454 in it. Commonality is almost nonexistent between different families of motorcycle engine design...and believe me...there's a ton of difference between the KLX250 and the KX250. You have to be an excellent fabricator to do this. You'd better know the geometry between the frame's pivot angle and location vs. the engine's countershaft sprocket. With bikes that have 11" or more of travel, these issues can turn into nightmares if you don't get it exact. It's hard enough to do it right when everything is engineered properly as evidenced by the chain rub blocks and guides on a factory setup.
Hey, nearly anything is possible. We put a man on the moon and other amazing things. But beware. A project like this will require some outstanding welding, cutting, and exact measurement and fabrication. In the few times I've seen something like this done, the individual was using an outstanding frame of one brand/design and using an outstanding engine from another. The KLX250/300 frame is no work of art and no earth shattering technology. With the number of excellent bikes available now days, I can't imagine the work, time, and money being anywhere near worth the effort.
