I had the good fortune of being given a nearly new Dunlop D606 90/90-21 front tire. Previously I have been using an 80/100-21 in various types, but this is my first 606. (Current rear tire is 110/100-18 Kenda Trakmaster, which is about halfway gone) I think I'll try a 606 rear to go along with the new front, although I do really like the TM rear.

An 80/100 tire has an 80mm cross section (of course) and the 90/90 has a cross section of 81mm (not much change there) so the bigger difference is in the width: the 90/90 is 10mm wider, or (0.39 inches) Doesn't look like it should be a problem.

Has anyone tried this tire on the KLX? I think it will fit fine, but it would be nice to know if anyone else has tried it, and if so, did they notice any effects on the handling. (my riding is about 70 off/ 30 on, gravel roads, trails are typical Pacific NW rocky/muddy/roots, plus I go to the dunes about 1/2 dozen times a year)

 

I used a 90/90 Pirelli MT21 on my KLX that was for the front of my KLR650. It worked fine and fit fine. I have preferred the 80/100, as it seems to turn better for me, but that tire will work without issue. The rear 606's work well too. I ran them on the rear of my 650.

 

I don't mind the 606 on the rear, BUT, I prefer a front tire with much sharper-shaped *****...and plenty of them, especially on the edge of the tire. I actually have a 606 on the rear now. I consider it to be a nice road-like knobby. It just doesn't have the corner-biting ***** I like in the front.

I'm still searching for a DOT front that I like. I'm running the hard compound Geomax 71 on the front, and it digs in like I prefer in the desert...but, it's not DOT.

Anyone know of a nice, pointy-knobbed DOT front tire? EDIT: Ah, Kimosabe! The MT21 looks like it fits the bill perfectly. I'm going to try this for my next front...Pointy ***** AND DOT rated!

That's kinda what I was thinking Blackheart. We get these muddy ruts on the trails out here, just the sort of thing where an aggressive front knobby comes in handy. But, this tire was a freebie, so I'm gonna give it a go. The MT21 looks pretty gnarly, like it would be great on the trails, but iffy on the pavement. Eh... always with the tradeoffs on dualsport bikes, I guess it keeps it interesting.

 

It sucks on pavement to be honest. If I take a turn too fast it will skid across the *****. It's also very bumpy and I feel like I have less control with these tires when I am going over 40mph or so. There great on dirt though.

 

jhoffy, I just googled "Pirelli MT21" but the tires that come up don't look like the tires you say are MT21. Your tires look like the Pirelli Scorpion, which are also DOT approved but with a more dirt focused tread pattern.

this is what my MT21 rear looks like (on the right). I have an MT17 on the front and absolutely love it...too bad we can't find 'em anymore.

 

The 606 on front is fine when new, once it wears some it starts pushing in corners and washing out. I took mine off before it was half worn. Id go with as aggressive DOT as you can get. I like the feeling of a planted front tire.
