Do I need a new clutch, or am I missing something?
Hi All, New user here I've taken time to look around, but can't seem to find an answer.
My clutch on my 07 250s isn't slipping, but, I'm unhappy with where it engages and disengages. The lever and cable are properly adjusted. It has just a bit of free play, and I can move handlebars lock to lock without engaging the clutch. But, once I take up the free play, I only have to move the lever another centimeter or so, and the clutch disengages. To put it another way, my clutch is disengaging very rapidly at the very beginning of the lever movement. This causes me to accidentally slip clutch on harder trails and makes precise feathering of the clutch a little difficult. I would prefer for the clutch to start to disengage a little deeper into the levers travel, but I can't seem to find a way to adjust for that. My only other thinking was the clutch plates are worn to the point where it takes next to nothing to disengaging them (but arent worn enough to slip on their own). So. Am I missing something? Should I try a new clutch? Or is that just how these clutches are?
Thanks!

Yea especially if you're measuring the throw in "cm" and not degrees.
It's probably fine. the shorter it is the less travel you will have. and I guess the further it can turn too(degrees) depending on it's shape.

Running a shorty lever definitely is going to have a negative effect on feel. ... and IMO most 4strokers don't slip the clutch much, but maybe some do. I do hit the clutch at times, but don't really try and feather it much, just make sure your in the right gear.
if you have to ride or feather the clutch, your gearing is totally incorrect for your riding application or style. that's a bit of a problem on the klx since it's geared for the street but built for the dirt. try different sprockets if you ride a lot off road, it'll help a lot... even dropping a tooth in the front usually keeps your clutch engaged like it's supposed to be.
other than that, you'll get used to it. when i started riding 100+hp bikes with race clutches it scared the living hell out of me, because between 0 and really fast, there was nothing. then i got used to it and realized that having a clutch like a toggle switch makes you ride like you're supposed to. same with having a throttle like a toggle switch. why are you at part throttle or at part clutch? that's no fun. stop going so slowly and it will stop being a problem.
