Crank case breather.
I see a ton of people re-routing the whole filter up to the air box?? What's the point?? People say when they twist out their oil cap, it flows out on them a bit?? Never had this happen. Would it be smart do this mod? And why??
I'm not clear on this one. There is already a breather hose that goes from the crankcase and into the clean side of the air filter. This system works fine and doesn't rob power. The KLX does not produce excessive crankcase pressure and does not need a different setup. The most one might do if it gives one comfort is to slightly drill out the size of the plastic hole in the airbox that fits into the rubber hose for the crankcase, but there's just not any real issues with the crankcase ventilation on the KLX.
Exactly!! Never experienced a oil plug puking in my face so to speek. Continuing to cut through the B.S. and get to the money and performance saving issues for the short life of my bike that I need right now!!!!
I don't know about the 250s, but the 650 runs the breather down hill from the cam cover to the air box. This deposits all oil that may condense out after leaving the engine, into the air box and out the drain.
We have done a few things to deal with this. I personally installed a breather tube with some coarse steel wool in it to try to condense a bit of the oil out of the mist. The tube from the breather runs UP to the tube, the tube is slightly angled UP and then the outlet finally runs down to the air box. Results - no more oil drippage from the air box drain.
The 650 still blows off oil as it always has and most big singles do, but the heavier mist is able to condense out a bit in the tube and steel wool to drain back into the engine.
Necessary? No, but keeps the drippage off the drive and garage floor.
I read about a Mazda PCV valve that some KLR riders have done, but forget the specific number. It can easilly be researched and found. That could stop some of the heavier blow off, but again not really necessary.
