Default Change filter or not?

Just got my new '07 250 earlier this week. I've put 60 miles on it and figure that it is time to change the oil. The question is, should I be putting on a new filter as well. And why does Kawa suggest the first oil change at 600 miles? One more thing, wondering what the difference betwenn 250S and 250H?

I would recommend that you always change the filter when changing the oil, a filter is cheap and easy to change.
However, in reality there probably is no need to change the filter since it surely has the capacity to hold much more contaminants with so few miles, but by the time my KLX had 600 miles on the odo it had already had 4 oil and filter changes so I may not be the best qualified to answer the question since I'm not stable and have issues.

Congrats and welcome to the club! You're gonna love it!

My advice? Just change the filter. Better safe thansorry. Anounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, etc. etc.

I think the H/S thing isjust internalvs externalmodel numbers.

Where are you 'upnorth'?

Thanks fellas. I live near Minneapolis, spend most of my time tooling around northern Minnesota. Can't wait to hit the grouse trails this fall.

They recommend 600 miles because there is break-in oil in it from the factory. If you don't follow the Kawi Recommended break-in (ie; Mototune break-in) then you should follow the mototune oil change procedure. I did the Kawi Break-in and also waited until 600 miles to change my oil. I put in Amsoil synthetic and new filter. Everything is perfect.

YIKES!!! SYNTHETIC AND WET CLUTCH = BAD LUCK USUALLY.. I use castrol oil. Always have and always will. There is a oil spec on the rear fender on the left side. I would put what they recommend. Also one more note. Ask the dealer if they changed the oil if it was a used klx. Also if it is brand new run it for 500-600 and change the oil then. One more note. When u break the bike in make sure within the next like 20 miles u get it above 4000 at least a few times to seat the rings other wise u will have some issues when the bike gets some mileage on it. Just a thought. But remember Kawasaki knows best!

There are many synthetic oils formulated specifically for motorcycles (and wet clutches). They work great! My clutch is much smoother with synthetic.

well here is what I have had experience with. I ran amsoil in my sportster and it was never right after that untill I changed the discs. Amsoil is supposedly the best motorcycle oil on the market.

It's cheap I run mind to speed ilde (idle or w.o.t) I do the oil every 1000 km's and oil and filter every 2000km's.
I did this with my sport quad and motor looked like new inside after two years of hard running.

Hi Tdupnorth I always thought 250S was the American version and the 250H was the Aussie one . How far up north are you? .
Cheers!
