Default Carb Help

Hey everyone, my new to me 09 klx250 is a pita on cold starts. I was planning to drill out the starter jet to .020 as mentioned by other forum members. When I opened my carb up I saw this starter jet with a marking saying “65” on there. Is that not the oem starter jet?

picture attached:

I'd say look at Doug's information at his pages click here to see the carb page. It calls for a 38 or 40 pilot. I think we used the 40 at our elevation of around 1000 ft. His stuff was plug and play on both my brother's 2006 and my 2009 KLXs.

That doesn't appear to be a factory starter jet to me. The starter jets on these bikes shouldn't have any screwdriver slots or hex sides and are not usually considered replaceable.
I suspect someone tried to clear it out or drill it out and ended up damaging the factory one, then replaced it with the closest they could find.

That is the pilot jet. The starter jet is a much smaller pressed in and not clearly visible in the picture. That carb appears to have a 65 pilot jet, which is WAAAAAAAY too rich, based on what has historically been used in this forum. Doug has the right stuff in his web pages.

My mistake, I must have gotten the pilot and starter jets mixed up. Did my jetting over 10 years ago so it's been a while.

@HemiBob I figured you just made a mistake, stuff happens. I know I make enough mistakes to prove it. Been a while since I did mine, I'm not really positive where the starter jet is, but Doug shows it in his photos on his site.

looking at the diagram on Doug’s page..that appears to be the starter jet location where I currently have the 65 marked nozzle inserted. Am I just looking at the diagrams wrong?

That's the location for the starter jet circuit. Someone has modded it(hopefully successfully) to accept a screw-in jet. Find a corresponding jet with the 0.020 orifice and it should help.
