Default Buying Used KLX250S

My neighbor has a 2012 KLX250S that has been sitting outside for a little over year and that has not been ridden. I asked him about it and he gave me a very good price. He works at a motorcycle shop and stated that everything worked perfectly fine before hand, but that his wife stopped riding it. My question is, is it worth the risk? I know for a fact it would need to have the carburetor cleaned, oil changed, new battery, new chain, drained fuel, etc. Outside of that, however, should I be worried about anything else that would cost a lot out of my pocket? Thanks a lot.

How many miles and what's a "good price"? It sounds like the conventional attempt at getting a wife a bike and she never really takes to it...been there done that. You say "sitting outside". How bad did the weather/sun affect it? At minimum it will need the carb pulled and cleaned properly. He works at a shop...mechanic or something else? He should know that selling a running bike will bring better money, and maybe there's more to the story.

I think the bike has about 1200 miles on it. The price he gave me was $1200 but I was able to talk him down to $1000. He just needs cash and wants it gone as soon as possible, but I don’t think he can bring himself to publicly post it for sale. His wife had an accident and passed away a little over a year ago hence why it hasn’t been ridden. I’m not entirely sure what he does at the bike and small engine shop, but I know he told me that the work on the bike can all be done at home and that he would even help me if needed. The weather is in south Mississippi, hot days with high humidity in the summer and cool days in the winter. Everything seems to look good on the bike other than that it needs a good wash and the maintenance mentioned.

Edit

That would seem like a deal to me, But looking it over would tell the story. Is it leaking any fluids, tire dry rotted, ect. I'd probably want to spray some starting fluid in it to make sure it fires.

$1000 is a steal even if you had to buy a new carb. KLX250's are easy to work on. Unless a critter chewed it up or built a nest or 2 in it, I don't see how sitting for a year would destroy it. One thing I can think of, if it's a stock tank check the inside for rust as that might be an issue with a metal tank.

No kidding...that price is pretty darned good for a 1200 mile KLX unless it's a totally trashed out pile...which is doesn't exactly sound like.

Good price assuming it doesn't need any major repairs, and sounds like it doesn't. If this deal was close to me, I'd buy it, fix it, then sell my 2007.

Deals are subjective. If you are mechanically inclined, you can revive her easily yourself, barring any bad surprises (like rats nests).
But I would frankly tell you that for that price, I'd come up and get it myself because my buddy is looking for a 250.
