Bike will only start in nutral
i think the kick stand my have to be up for it to not start in neutral... could be wrong but worth the shot. all i remember is there is something to do with the kickstand, it not being in neutral, and starting/driving...not sure what the relation was though.
First off I removed the kickstand saftey switch. I figured it was a couple of ounces of added weight and something else to go wrong. You can bypass the circuit by jumpering the two wires together for the switch(follow them up under the seat to the connector). Then try to start it in gear. Ifit starts then the problem is in the switch. There is also a safety in the clutch lever. It will only let you start the bike in gear if the clutch is pulled in. I found this out when I put on the shorty clutch lever. There were no provisions in the lever for this safety. The lever was for the 300 and I don't belive it uses the clutch lever saftey. If you recently replaced the clutch lever with anything other than a oem lever this is where the problem is. You can also easily check the circuit for malfunctions by finding the wires that come out of the clutch lever and disconnect them. Then put a jumper between the 2 wires. Put the bike in gear and importantly pull the clutch lever in then try to start. If the bike starts then the problem is in the the safety switch. I bypassed the circuit by soldering the wires together for the shorty lever. The bike will start in gear now wether the clutch is pulled in or not, but I have made it a habit to always have the clutch pulled in when I start it wether it is in gear or neutral. Hopes this helps.
There are three switches that come into play for starting and/or running. Neutral safety switch, clutch safety switch, and kickstand safety switch. Assuming that all three are installed and functioning as intended:
The bike should always be able to start in neutral, regardless of clutch or kickstand positions.
If the clutch is pulled in, the bike will be able to start in gear, whether or not the kickstand is down.
If the kickstand is down and the bike is in gear, it will still start if the clutch is pulled in, but it will kill the engine as soon as the clutch is let out.
