Question Which bike first? Dirt/Asphalt>

Hey guys. Noob here. I am pretty close to pulling the trigger on a new '09 and wanted your opinions. I want to take my 10 year old out on the dirt (he has a KLX110) and do some trail riding. I also want to possibly ride the bike to work, occasionally, maybe one a week at most. And do some weekend rides on both asphalt and dirt.

My question:

Would you start with a supermoto and buy a second set of dirt wheels/tires, OR would you start with the dirt version and buy a second set of street wheels/tires?

I honestly don't know what I will be on more, dirt or street. For sure street in the summer. Mostly dirt in the winter.

I am in SoCal.

Thanks!

Go with the dirt version because the suspension on the supermoto is designed for the street and it has a shorter travel suspension. You would have to regear the the supermoto to go dirt riding also! The black plastics do look nice on the sm!

Thanks for the welcome.

I think I am leaning towards the dirt version. If I want black plastics I can always order off an SM

Can anyone recommend a street (or mostly street) tire that will fit the KLX250S? Doesn't seem to be alot out there, or maybe I haven't looked thoroughly enough.

I'm in the process of installing kenda K761's. So far I have the front tire on and it seems to be a very grippy tire on the asphalt. Can't wait to get the rear on tomorrow. The tread looks like it can handle some dirt but not likely deep mud. Can't beat them for the price. $44 front, $54 rear from motorcycle-superstore.com

How do these bikes do jumping? How is the stock suspension? I am not looking to do triples anytime soon but I do like getting in the air.

FWIW: I am 37 and looking to get another 2 wheeler. I have not had my own bike for about 15 years. I rode the crap out of a CR125 when I was a kid and spent most of my childhood in the dirt. My last bike was a POS KDX200 that I called "the clacker" because when it landed it sounded like the frame was going to come apart.

My 10 year old has a KLX110 and I am ready to start riding with him instead of watching. I don't know how crazy I will get now that I understand fear and pain as an adult. Unlike when I was 16.

I also have a pimp Yamaha Rhino which has been the chase vehicle for awhile.

Just not sure if I want this DS or if I should get more of a race bike, like a CRF250(R or X) or something?

Thoughts?
