Default Back to the woods

I was driving a buddy’s HD Heritage this weekend testing it out because I was thinking about getting a cruiser for me and the wife to both enjoy. It was a nice night to ride and we were taking some of the back roads and just enjoying the country view. All of a sudden I see something running in a field so I start to slow down and without any warning a deer jumps on top of the front fender of the bike and jumps off. I pulled over at the next gas station and my friend was ridding behind me pulled over too and just had a look of complete awe. So after I had a drink and changed my pants we drove back and I decided I am safer in the woods. I am still not sure how I did not drop that monster of a bike and happy that it came out with only a dent in the front fender. So has anyone else had a deer take a ride with them yet?

Deer encounters are my biggest fear when riding. Luckily, I've been able to avoid them so far. I've been less lucky with soccer moms in SUV'S making left hand turns across my lane, but that's a different story.

I'll take all the steps I can to minimize the risk but, knowing that nobody lives forever, I'd rather go out doing something I love than give it up out of fear.

BTW, my idea of a cruiser:

I think I have had to dodge more animals on the road than I have in the woods. Doesnt make sense to me but I guess that is how it is.

WOW! That's like the video on-line where the bike slices a deer in half, except in your case he ran off to live another day. I always think about deer running out in front of me when I'm doing 40 on the Forest Service roads around here. The highway is another story, if that happens, I just hope I live...

Thanks guys, I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing. I just don't get why I see more wildlife on the road than on the trails?

I think its a speed thing.
In the woods you are mainly going slower and making yourself heard giving the animal time to hear you and get away.
At road speeds you are on them so quickly that they can't get away in time.
I see plenty of roos both on the bush and on country roads.
Never hit one riding in the dirt, although there have been some close shaves) but I have hit a few on the road.

The one thing that puzzles me is that when they are on the side of the road, they can jump 2 ways.
Away from the road or onto the road.
They always go onto the road.
