Default Anyone Running Without a Snorkle?

I keep thinking about just removing the snorkle all together! As long as I don't try and bury the bike in mud or something, it should not be a problem - at least not one that I can think about.

I don't have to worry about carb freezing here in Florida - not a problem!

There should be more air flow without the snorkle in place.

A friend of mine has a KLX250S - completely stock. He keeps asking me to put together a performance mod package for him. I might do a two phase kind of approach.

Stage 1 - the low buck approach:

o shim the stock needle with 1, possibly 2 #4 stainless steel washers - about .025 thick.
o drill the slide with a 7/64ths drill bit.
o drill out the pilot jet adjustment screw.
o turn the pilot jet adjustment screw out 2 full turns.
o remove the air box snorkle
o #125 main jet
o drill out the exhaust baffle
o 13 tooth countersprocket

Stage 2 - "Grapevine Mod Package"

Add to the above:
o 2005 KLX300 needle
o clamp
o shim
o KDX 220 snorkle

Wonder if there will any difference at all. Might have to give it a try and report back.

Wha'dy'all think?

You can run just fine without a snorkle. It won't effect anything. The odds for getting water in the airbox because of the snorkle being off are not that much greater than when the snorkle is on. If the bike gets submerged it will take on water ...... snorkle or not. My ONLY reason for runing with it on is to muffle the intake noise. The intake noise is greatly increased with the snorkle off. Thats not a bad thing its just that I prefer to hear my pipe (no reference to which one) rather than the suction noise of the intake.
So, all will work out ok without the snorkle, you can even run with the airbox lid completely off (make sure your getting enough fuel to compensate for it). Our airbox is pretty well protected with the seat, and water is just not that big of an issue. JMHO

Hi Marty,

I ran for a while with the lid off, and now just have the snorkle removed. I have a KDX snorkle still in the bag, but I kinda like the sound of the intake noise. The only problem I have, is my air filter gets dirty quickly. But you know how dry it is right now.

Have you been riding the KLX much? I've been pretty busy the last month and haven't been riding much. I'll have to do something to change that.

Mike,

Not as much as I would like to. First off, I'm spending too much time looking for a real job. I've got a few years before I can start drawing on my retirement package and Social Security - if the politicians don't give it all away to illegal immigrants.

Been sending resumes, going to interviews and such, but thus far nothing.

Guess no one wants to hire a 58 year old communciations engineer. Heck, I'm willing to do just about anything at a reasonable cost!

Thankfully I'm doing a lot of MSF classes, so I'm keeping myself afloat that way.

Besides, it's getting to be too hot after about 10 AM to do any riding at all.

You know, I noticed a huge difference just by changing the front sprocket to a 13t. The rest should get done this Friday, but its a whole new animal even with just one modification.

Hey Gravy,
Did you go with a 45t rear sprocket? Did you have to get a longer chain? or was it long enough with the 13t front? I'm wantng to go to a 45t. Just wondering..

Yes I had to get a 110link chain. Actually I bought a green 120 link chain and cut it down.

Back to the original snorkel issue.
Marty when I was running it with the snorkle off, the intake noise was something terrible. I thought I liked it at 1st till I hit the highway, then it sounded like "Bwaggggg, Boggggg" really deep, throaty intake sound, but not in a good way. Try it and find out.
