LOL!...all of you are wrong. I use the "hoard of locusts" method for KLX traveling. Pull the KLX behind your van or camper and find a place to camp for free in the forest or BLM lands. Carry all manner of luxury camping gear ranging from a solar shower, 2-burner cook stove, portapotty, food, liquor, and sleeping off the ground. Then just like a hoard of locusts descending on a large swath of farmland, ride everything good in the area on your KLX worth riding...leaving a "scorched earth" behind as you move on to the next victim...without too sore a butt.

But on a more serious note...jckid, how old are you? I'd still take the Husky. But I'm old and lazy now, and such masochistic efforts just seem like a death march to me.

With mileage being my only concern, I'd take the Kawi. Afterall, its an adventure, right?

Yes, you are certifiably insane for even thinking about it. 1200 miles in 6 days.

It's unthinkable...

Of course, this is coming from a guy who did a SS1000 (1000 miles in 24 hours) and a BB1500 (1500 miles in 36 hours) last November on my 2006 KLX.

I would suggest putting on a set of Shinko 705's and going back to stock gearing.

Also, look into the Sweet Cheeks. I used them on my Iron Butt ride and never had an issue. I did spend some time to get them right before the ride, though. I used rolled up closed cell foam (from a sleeping pad) instead of the Coke bottles. That way I was able to get the support just right.

Go for it and have big fun!

Would the Shinko 705 be good on my SF? I do 75% street and 25% "off road"

I currently run Shinko 700s because I do 60/40, but if I did 75/25, I wouldn't hesitate to run the 705s at all.

41. We have a travel trailer for camping as well, but I'm really more into roughing it. I'd much rather travel by motorcycle, or better yet, backpack. I don't mind going without a shower for two nights in a row, but by the 3rd day, I do like a shower. I like a challenge, and yes, I nearly ride a hardtail mountain bike--softail Moots to be precise.

Well, I guess I'm not crazy after all! Not that crazy anyway! But seriously, that is impressive.

Now you're talking camping there, deej. Hey, I totally support anyone's preference for riding, traveling, and camping...death march or luxury. That's what it's all about. But you gotta admit...it's sure nice to take that shower...grab a cold one from the huge ice chest that also contains steaks and salmon...and not have to get out of the camper on a cold night because you have a nice, modern, chemical portapotty. Life is good.

This is a great thread! What I love about motorcycling is that is something different to each person. Everyone forgets that not so terribly long ago, 250cc bikes were considered "mid-displacements" and 500 to 750 were "large" bikes. I admire folks that I run into who taking long trips on "smalle bikes. My personal feeling is that many of us are returning to smaller bikes for that feeling we got when we first swung a leg over a motorcycle. I don't thinks wise to take a KLX on an interstate but wandering around a chunk of America on the backroads on a KLX would be something grand. There is a great book, written in 1964 by Peter S. Beagle, called "I see by My Outfit" that is about two young guys riding across the US on motor scooters(not Bergmans!). Anyway, just my thoughts...
