351 jetting question

Default 351 jetting question

Local dealer said he has done several 351 conversions, (the jug and pipe), and doesn't rejet the carb. He said they all worked fine.

Anyone here done the conversion with pipe without rejetting? Doesn't sound right to me.

I would follow Bill's advice and re-jet as he recommends for your setup.

Thanks IDRIDR, that's what I'd do if I did the conversion. I'm just wondering if the "several" conversions this dealer has done could run well without rejetting?

I've been following the threads on the 351 conversions and don't remember anyone saying they left the carb untouched.

Maybe I've just had bad experiences, but, I don't trust ANYTHING a "dealer" says.....

FWIW i ran my bike around a little after my 331 install with my previous 250 jetting. It ran pretty well considering the displacement increase, but had a lean idle hang, surging in the mid throttle ranges and wouldn't pull a redline in any gear but first and second.

So yes you probably COULD install a big bore and not rejet but it would probably run like ****.

And as Blackheart said, i wouldn't trust a dealership to wash my bike, let alone work on the thing.

Sounds like the dealer potentially screwed up a few motors.

Another reason why I never checkbook my repairs/mods.

uhhhh... yeaa....... i WOULDNT step foot in that dealer again.

No, I think they are not a bad dealership as dealerships go. I rode one of their early 351 conversions a couple of years ago that included the Power Bomb pipe and pumper carb. At the time they said they didn't recommend the extra expense of the pumper carb and thought just rejetting the stock carb was sufficient. Now they are saying even rejetting isn't necessary.

Well, who knows. Seems I've read some threads about trouble getting the jetting right with the conversion but, except for Wildcard, I don't remember reading about anyone that just tried the conversion with stock jetting. Maybe the dealer's conversions did run fine, or maybe it's just a subjective type of thing.

My next question would be. If the motor burns up because its running way too lean are you going to pay for it? Im betting they are going to say no. Getting jetting right is not really that hard.... well for me at least.

It also doesn't make sense to me that they wouldn't run lean which is why I asked the original question: Has anyone here done the conversion without rejetting?
