331 & pumper Carb vs Modified 250... Theres just no comparison - One Mans opinion
I guess from a forum perspective, I'm about the only one who happens to currently own two 2006 KLX 250 Dual Sport bikes (thats right, my son is still paying it off, so as the defacto bank, it's STILL MINE technically..)
One bike, as you know, is Nobrakes modified bike that is a 331cc big bore & pumper carb while the other one is a 'standard modification' bike, i.e. it has the open air box, Large jetting (#40 P and #130 M) and an after market exhaust so air flow / fuel is maximized . (also has all the pollution control crap removed)
Well, I finally got to ride both on the trails yesterday and I have to tell you, its my humble opinion that there is just no comparison, they are really two different bikes at this point.
I rode one, then the other, then the one again, then the other again in 5 min increments so as to not get too far removed from what the previous ride felt like.
I know this report is anecdotal opinion only, but thought you might be interested in hearing it anyway so here gos:
The standard mod 250 is great in my opinion, don't get me wrong, its responsive and powerful. the power is gradual and there is some degree of latency between throttlemovement and delivery of power to the rear wheels.
The 331/ pumper carb is just in a different league. The power is consistent from the first crack of the throttle through all gears and it pulls through all the gears...
The instantaneous pull from the pumper carb is as close to my CR 2 smoke as I think one can get without perhaps modifying the cams (Marty...)
I really believe it is simply a different bike.
there you have it, one man's opinion...[8D]

Sweet! Of course, I saw all the improvements gradually and incrementally over a long period of time so I would find it very enlightening to ride it next to a mostly stock bike. A very unique perspective you have with both right there side by side.
Can you tell much difference with the 0.44 fork springs vs the stockers? Or is it apples to oranges due to all the other changes it might be hard to totally seperate just the suspension from the other mods too?

DS you bringing both bikes to the NE ride? What about ur son is he gonna come? that would be cool.
Unfortunately no, he's going somewhere with his girl friend bla bla bla, I tuned it out after no......LOL
Hey Dave, did you get the final drive gearing swapped out? Just curious if you had that done yet when you rode both side by side. I know I tended to prefer the higher stock gearing of 14:42, but I thought you said you were planning on setting it up with lower gearing. It should really have a good bite with a few more teeth on the rear sprocket (no pun intended).

EDIT: BTW - You should never miss an opportunity to take credit for a great pun!
