300 cylinder kit / where to buy?

RE: 300 cylinder kit / questions
Also Iam just raising questions about the 300 mod, I was checking part #'s from the 250s to the 300 and they had the same head cover and valve, but different head assy and crank shaft. Iam not a mechanic but was wondering if this made a difference in reliability, maybe the 300 crank is more heavy duty. I always do alot of research before any modification like this. Thanks for any input.

RE: 300 cylinder kit / questions
To the best of my knowledge, the 300 kit on the 250 is a Kawi supported conversion won't void your warranty or anything if you have it done by a dealer. If you do it yourself, I'd say all bets are off on the warranty, unless you can somehow prove you are a qualified mechanic. Also, I'd say 331 might void certain warranty items, but not necessarily everything, but I don't think that conversion is a Kawi factory supported configuration. But people have been overboring the KLX300 to 331cc for years. Some even do the stroker mod and modify or swap out the crank to give not only larger bore, but also longer travel which also increases the displacement even more - 365 cc is common by doing that. I'm not aware of any reliability issues with these.
You buy the parts seperately unless you come across a kit which some dealers were throwing in at no charge with new purchases in Australia from what I heard. Some folks were selling those on e-bay. I bought my parts from RonAyers.com. Cheaper than dealer prices. If you want the 331, just buy the 300 cylinder, but not anything else. Then get in contact with KustomKraft.com and arrange to ship it to them to have it bored to 331cc and plated, and they ship you back the overbored cylinder + replacement piston, rings, pin, clips, gaskets. That takes about two weeks turn-around, not counting shipping time. It's up to you to install it or arrange to have it installed by a mechanic.

Please post your findings. I am getting ready to do the 331cc big bore with a used KLX300 cylinder that I picked up on ebay for $125.00. The big bore including piston, rings, pin, clips and gaskets isa little over$400.00 (When I last checked a month ago it was $ 420.00). So I should wind up around $575.00 including shipping for the "Whole Enchilada". If you want to go 292cc, which isthe actual displacement of the KLX300, and you want new parts then I think Ron Ayers.com is probably the best source. Check out Common Part #'sin this forum. FYI, there is a2006 KLX300cylinder, piston set that is on the ebay site thatEMS a.k.a. Eric posted under the recent"lot of cheap plastics"post. Good luckand please let me know if you find any differences in the 250 and 300 bottom ends.

The difference in the the head assembly part number is because the KLX300 doesn't have the air suction system (smog plumbing).
As for the crankshaft, no worries. They are diffent part numbers because the KLX300 doesn't have the e-start gear. Stroke is identical to the 250s though.
Bottom line is people have installed the kit and are running fine.
