Hole-in-the-Ground is a large maar (explosion crater) in the Fort Rock Basin of Lake County, central Oregon, northeast of Crater Lake, near Oregon Route 31.
It is about 1,600 meters (1.0 mi) across, a little longer N-S than E-W.[1] Its floor is about 150 meters (490 ft) below the surrounding ground level and has a rim that rises 35 to 65 meters (110 to 210 ft) above, the highest point on the east side. The crater formed during the late Pleistocene, between 13,500 and 18,000 years ago, at which time the Fort Rock Basin was a lake and the location was near the shore. Basaltic magma intruding near the surface flashed ground water to steam, which blew out overlying rock and soil, along with some juvenile material. As material slid into the hole formed, it closed the vent and the process repeated, eventually forming the huge hole.[3] Blocks as large as 8 meters (26 ft) in size were flung as far as 3.7 kilometers (2.3 mi) from the crater.[4]
To the west of Hole-in-the-Ground is an even bigger maar, 1,820 meters (1.1 mi), but older and more eroded, called Big Hole.

Got there Sunday late afternoon and left on Friday morning. It was raining pretty hard on Thursday night all through the night in fact, and every hour I woke up thinking "Oh man we have to pack up in the wet miserable rain" Then at 7 am I finally got up and walked outside and the sun was out and everything was dry. Its like we ordered it that way. Another note, it drizzled and even rained slightly once or twice on the whole trip. But it was just enough to keep the dust down and pack the dirt/sand on the trails. Again it couldn't have been a better trip.

Next year will be even better.......not sure how, but it will.

Deej,

Great report man!!!

I always wonder how people make these huge posts with hundreds of pics and have them in exact timeline & order....... How in the world do they remember all that??????

I'm gald to see you're normal buddy!

By the way, I'm shocked that you're allowed to ride down in that big hole. I can't believe the bunny huggers allow it.

Those are one of my favorite Chevys too!! painted in '69 Hugger orange, a Camaro color.

Looks like you guys had a great time. My younger brother just bought an immaculate 07
KLX and I am looking forward to sharing some time with him on trips just like yours.
Thanks for sharing your trip with us. I hope Dr Atkins doesn't read it, he will kick your butt.

Great trip report Deej! Thanks for posting! I'm just itchin' to get back over to China Hat, and this just adds fuel to the fire. Looks like the drizzle did you a great favor, the dust over there is pretty nasty sometimes.
