My verdict comparing the two bikes: You can't. Apples and oranges. I love the DRZ for around town hooliganism. The KLX is great for riding out 20 miles to do some rabbit shooting. For trips, my Harley Road King. As has been mentioned many times before, dual purpose has its compromises.
BUT-ifI had to stay with only one bike forever (and I've been riding 40 years) just for the pure joy of riding, it's the DRZ, hands down. And I just sold my Hayabusa after 20,000 miles and 4 years of riding it. I've had many bikes since the mid-1960s, and I'm 60 years old. So, in all of that, the DRZ SM with some performance upgrades is the most fun on two wheels. Including the new Ducati Hypermotard--which EVERYONE needs to test ride.

what's up brother? well, I sent him an offer but he declined. I even gave him the opportunity to take all the unnecessary stuff off like his aftermarket tank, tires, etc. and he still wasn't interested. I told him I would trade him stock bike for stock bike for $2000. I think this is a pretty good deal considering my bike only has 300 or so miles, in showroom condition, and still has 10 months left on warranty. He said he wasn't interested and that he could find used ones all over for $4500 on Thumpertalk. I checked, and the used ones have 4000 or so miles on them, are 2005's, or are newer 2007's for $5500 with still over 1000 miles on them. He's stuck on this $3850 price for his KLX. I do not think that he will get close to that if history of KLX sales are any indication. Mine was just a freak thing with a soldier in Iraq getting ready to come home and paying $4200 for it, but it also was in new condition with only 500 miles and full exhaust. I told him my offer still stands and that he would pay a lot more if he traded thru a dealer. A new DRZ can be had for $5700 plus taxes, but they'll only offer him around $3000 if he's lucky on trade for his KLX. And if I buy used, I would like a 2007. I found a 2007 in Texas with 200 miles for $4200. I'm gonna solicit him today. As much as I like the DRZ, I really miss the dirt. I know I could slap on some DRZ dirt wheels, but honestly, I really wouldn't like to have that much dough wrapped up in a playbike. What's your take, do you think I was out of line with my offer of $2000 difference? I mean, he was the one who contacted me first and who is really dying for a DRZ. A dealer will charge him more for a trade I know. Of course if he sells his KLX and buys a DRZ outright he'd be okay, but unloading a used KLX for anything above $3500 or even $3800 is nearly impossible to do. IDK
oh yeah- the Harley got sold two weeks ago in case you cared. But wow, those new 2008 Custom Sportsters are darn sweet.

Aftermarket parts is always a deceiving factor. As an owner, you need to do one of two things -- remove them and sell them separately or accept the fact that they add $0 in value to the bike. They act as a differentiator so that your bike may sell faster, but they aren't going to add to your bike's worth. In fact, lots of people will be turned off by the mods -- it implies that you tinkered a lot with the bike ("screwed up the factory settings so that it doesn't run right") and/or rode the bike really hard (someone who put lots of performance parts on a bike must have done so for a reason and most people don't want a used bike from a guy who rode the bike that hard).
So, actually dialing back the list of modifications to the more common things (e.g., exhaust) and getting rid of the clutter (e.g., the $3 bottle of radiator additive) will make the bike look less like a performance project and more like a good bike with a few upgrades.
Either way, he's fishing with that $3,800 price. He may get it. Very possible. But, it will take some time and he needs to find the right person.
