I have had a couple of the older gen, a 1989 and a 1991. Make sure the previous owner has cleaned or had the dealer clean out the KIPS valves periodically. If you let them accumulate carbon until they lock up it will cost more than the bike is worth to fix just in parts(I had no idea two strokes had valves when I got the fist KDX). I may have just had bad luck, but I blew the rear shock on both of the ones that I had.

If you look at a 220, it is important that the piston be changed to a wiseco before it grenades. Other than that, all you need to know about is the linkage bearings (lower shock bearing is prone to dirt infiltration and failure) and the kips. Run a good quality 2 stroke oil, and not too much of it.
These guys are generally pretty helpful.

I have a 05, and it's a weapon in the woods.
