Hey, just wanted to post some pictures of my KLX250 I converted to a dual sport. I have had the bike since 03, and been slowly "restoring" it. I finally got it registered this year with the help of a 180$ universal dual sport kit from rocky mountain atv.

I was also wondering how do you check the oil. I have a window at the bottom of my case to show oil level. Do you check the oil with the bike standing straight up or sitting on the kick stand at an angle? Thanks

 

Straight up. She looks similar to my ole 300.

hey guys, wondering if anyone has supermoto'd this bike or put street tires on the oem rims? what have you guys done? i just got my 96 CA plated

 

Kawasaki did it with both the foreign D-Tracker and then again with the KLX250SF. Of course it was likely to response of seeing what others did and the too brief US infatuation with supermoto.

 

As far as I know there is no easy route to pre-2009 supermoto 17 inch rims. It's going to be an expensive proposition. With the post 2009 bikes you can try and find a set of SF wheels. Even those will set you back over a grand from what I have seen.

Even then if you try and exploit the grip that 17 inch rubber offers you'll find the off road suspension too soft and long with a lot of pitching under braking and direction change.

Your best bet is just street oriented tires in stock sizes.

 

But a decent rider can outperform most sport bikes on tight roads that favor handling over engine. After all, it seems a dual sport with decent tires can give them fits too. Feel free to ask me, and some of my sport bike riding friends, how I know that... You learn how to deal with long travel suspension.

I do agree the lowest cost is to simply put street tires on it. Since customs went with 21"front tires it isn't hard to get a good road tire in 21. No problem getting an 18 either.

 

Well, $1000 for wheels sub optimal dual sport with 17 inch tires on it seems like poor value to me, but I bet it'd be well over a grand to get it done.

I saw a 70 year old woman make a lot of high powered sport bike guys look like fools on a Honda NX250. She'd raced all her life.

I think the fastest bike over ground here on back roads in New England with frost heaves, broken pavement, sand and leaves would be a DRZ400 or something like a KXL351SF.

You can learn to deal with soft suspension but if someone wants to go that route sell the 250s and take the money and the $1000 you've spent on the wheels and buy a proper supermoto.
