1979 KE 250 turn signal problem
 

I just got the bike i doubt that it will pass inspection because the turn signals are acting up. The back ones come on but they are pretty dim and dont flash, they just stay on . The front ones do the same thing but are even dimmer, i couldn't even tell they were coming on at all until i took the orange covers off. Put new bulbs in just hoping it was something that simple, but of course not. So what do i need to do?

Welcome to the forums, post a picture if you can. Does that bike have a battery and is kick start? It sounds like either a low or dead battery, poor charging output, and or the flash unit is corroded. You might pull the seat and the headlight cover and check all of the plug in connections paying close attention to corrosion. Again welcome and good luck, keep us posted on the fix. ;)

thanks, yes it has a battery and is kick start. I dont think it would be the battery because the headlight and tail light both are on. And it doesnt look to be a corrosion issue either. Would anyone know where the flash unit, indicator, and relay are for this bike? I either cant find them or cant recognize them. Iwould post pics but i have tofind mycamera

Does it have plenty of cranking power? The flasher unit (huh huh huh he said unit) is usually located behind the headlight assembly, but I have seen them behind the battery box on some bikes. I guess it could be possible that your blinker switch is going bad, here try this. Do you have a car battery charger? Hook it up to the battery while its in the bike, and then try the turn signals. Let me know what happens.;)

i dont own a car battery charger, we just use jumper cables when we have a dead battery

Oh dude you gotta invest in a battery tender, I use on on both bikes and it really does double the life of the battery. I also wired in a 12v plug on both of my bikes and so I can charge the batteries, run a cell phone charger or charge between bikes using my patented cord.:D

No more fumbling with taking off the battery covers, just plug and go. Oh and jumping a dead battery can zap the life out of an alternator. Its always a better choice if you can charge it on a slower rate over a longer period of time.;)

I would check the wires both the battery wires and the signal lite wires...it almost sounds like a loose ground to me.;)

i found what i think is the relay its a little black box with 2 flat prong coming off that plug into the wire connector and one more flat prong for grounding it near the battery, it says S3H-02 on top and 87 underneath where the prongs are.When i took it out the signals no longer came on so im guessing this is the relay. Should i just go up to my Kawasaki store and get another one of these and see how that does?

yeah, if no luck there..try the auto parts store..a 12-volt relay is pretty common.:D Might as well pick up a new flasher to boot..how long since the bike was inspected?...I see it's a 1979, so if it sat for any time..double check the voltage at the lights to make sure u see 12 and not less.

It looks like the sticker says it was inspected in '05. How exactly do i check the voltage at the lights? Also i heard it could just be dirty connections in the wiring, what would be the best way to go about cleaning them up?
