I wired mine right to the battery, that way I can trickle charge backwards through the socket with my battery tender. Just install a 20 amp inline fuseholder.

Agree. Trying to splice off the minimal size wiring in the harness up around the triple clamp area isn't the best option. It's better for an accessory power outlet to have its own dedicated power supply with a heavier wire fused right from the battery. You can also get some heavy duty heat shrink to wrap the two wires and/or a small diameter spiral wrap to protect them. deej's suggestion of using the accessory outlet is also a good idea for using a battery tender, and you can even keep the battery topped off out in the field from your camping/travel/towing vehicle in camp through that socket via the vehicle battery. This can be really helpful during cold weather camping and riding.

cigar socket has potential of a high load device being plugged into it, so I agree that it should be fused and wired directly to the battery. Fuse should be near the battery in case the wiring short or grounds.

I did the same as Deej (no, I didn't WASH my bike again today...) I put the pigtail at the battery end. It just sticks out over my coolant tank. I originally put it there to trickle charge the battery, but then I found a cool 12v socket that plugs right into it.

That's a nice looking 12v socket. Did you get it here or online? I think I'll do the same as I use my iPhone as my gps and the battery life is terrible!

Cheers

Exact setup I have on mine... When I ride, I clip my GPS to something strapped on the rear anyway, so no need to have a socket up front.
