Default 128jet report

What a miserable day to test ride, 42deg, windy and rainy. Can you say carb icing....I 'fing can, rrrrrrrr.
Anyway I got the 128 jet in and put a .035in washer under the needle. With the washer I can get the same effect as the KLX300 needle. I was very impressed with the torque increase in the 4500-7000 range, very snappy. Of course when you raise the needle, you sacrifice cruise mileage. Filled the beast and headed 70 miles North on the freeway, ***** to the wall. 80mph for at least 50 miles,an occasional 86, quite a fatiguing ride in the wind. When I hit Bellingham I filled up, 70mi with 1.4gal = 50mpg, acceptable with the present weather. I took the back road home, HWY9 for the locals. Tried to keep it at 55mph for the most part. It got dark and heavy rain, couldn't see well at all, and the carb started icing, allot. 10 miles from home, the candle went out in the middle of an intersection, very embarrassing. Give it two minutes, and away I go. Through all that, when I gassed up at 96miles with 1.6 gal, it worked out to be 60mpg. Thats 5mpg less than my best, but for the power gain, I'll take it any time.

a16tony,

You sure are one dedicated person. 42 degrees with wind and rain conditions.

The information sounds very promising! Decent gas mileage and more snap to boot. Sounds like you've got the bike just the way it should be.

I'm amassing the parts to start updating mine now. Should be ready to go by the end of next week. Looking forward to seeing just what it feels like.

Thanks to you and Todd for doing all the exploration work on these bikes. It's kind of nice to be able to sit back and watch some talented folks take the lead and find out just what makes the little green beast roar to life!

Carb icing? Is that like icing on a cake? I don't get no steenkin' icin' down here!

I myself want to do these mods but i am not sure i want to go thru this icing thing, what to do, I thought for sure you had it licked when you found the water in your air box. [:@]

I think you will have the same issue, my mods did not change the high volume of air flow across the little carb. Need to stop road spray from getting the filter wet. I've used the stock, hi-flow and no snorkel.
I thought it was cured when I properly oiled the filter, definitely reduced the problem. I going to turn the hi-flow snorkel 180 degrees, just like a speed boat would do.

I was just going to suggest that to you! You're just too quick!

What air filter are you running in your bike?

Mine is stock, but a Uni will probably wind up in there, properly oiled of course.

So, how do you like the bike with the new jet in it?

To summarize, you have:

High-flow snorkel
128 jet
13 / 45 gearing
1/2 drilled out muffler baffle

If there is anything I've forgotten, please comment.

Would you do it differently if you were to do it again?

I toyed with the idea of swapping in the 125 for the 122 last night just to see. Before I did, I went out and played around a bit. The bike was running so darn good that I left it alone. Besides, swapping the main jet with the carb on the bike is a pain. Not a big pain, mind you. But still not worth it given how well the 122 is working for me right now.

It's been cool and damp here for a change. Yesterday it was in the low 40s on my way to and from work. No carb icing problems but maybe it wasn't wet (or cold) enough. Hmm...

BTW, Dallas is at about 500 ft above sea level.

I just have not had time to put an entire tank through to reserve yet since the carb work. I'll try hard to do that this weekend. I live too close to where I work...

Got the stock air filter. The bike ran fantastic on the first leg of the trip, real good on the freeway. With the needle raised .035, it's hard to shift out of first gear before the limiter hits. I had too much gear on the try wheelies. Right now, I'm not changing any of the set up, just the snorkel direction. I will wait for some dry days make sure things are perfect.

I find the icing occurs mostly a the 4000rpm range after 15-20 minutes. Do your gas station add 10-15% alcohol to the fuel?

Have you checked the filter again to see if you have the moisture issue as before, and if so there is a drian on the air box, is it obstructed?

No. But we do get the special EPA gas here.
