Yes, that 3hp / 20% is irrelevant because most people won't use it unless they're stuck in a mudhole and have to jack the throttle FWO to get the back spinning. I don't think it would matter if it makes 10 more horsepower at 9k RPMs because nobody I know rides a trails bike banging off the rev lmiter. If you look at the dyno sheet, they're making pretty much the same torque in the midrange RPMs. That peak HP number is just a cute little statistic and only useful when you're doing 60 mph down the highway. Usable torque is more important to me.

Only jet I changed was the main, and put in DynoJet's needle. Jetting a carburetor isn't that difficult, as long as you take it one step at a time. If you do more mods like an exhaust and BB then yeah you'd have to change the pilot I'm sure, but crap, go up one size in pilot, see if that works, then go up another. Nobody (I know of) is running much bigger on the main than a DJ 132 (not sure what the comparable Kehlin number would be). Doesn't seem like rocket science to me, but if you don't like working on your bike, I guess that doesn't change anything. And 60 for a jetkit compared to whatever a PC is going for (couple hundred I thought) that's not too bad. And I don't think its that hard to take off the plastics, zip off the tank, and pull out the carburetor, but again, I don't mind working on what I own.

Its like someone ^^ said... EFI is only as good as the setup they put on the bike... and yeah the WR has a good setup it seems. But I can't fix an EFI. Most people can't fix an EFI if something goes bad. Yeah the EFI makes more power and is more accurate but that isn't the do-all end-all of pros/cons.

I'm sure you could get $4k if you sold your KLX, and the WR is about 6K so I only see a 2K loss in money... why do you think you'd get less for the KLX? Or do you have high interest on the loan? Plus you could sell whatever mods you have.

I'm not in a bad mood at all, I said in the beginning I hope nothing I say rubs you wrong, just trying to have a constructive discussion. I meant nothing in an offensive way! Just trying to make some points in response to your post.

Both bikes are nice but if I had to do it now not 3 years ago I'd buy the yamaha our bikes are fine but I'd rather have a bit more modern one. And the trails we ride around here are all sand and fast this thing is pinned always every hp counts. Same on the street.

Heck I've said this more than once,...nobody loves their KLX more than me, but if I could go back in time I would buy the Honda 650. Does that mean I don't love my bike? No. I might add, that for me I will also never get rid of my KLX...EVER!!! It must have something to do with not wanting anyone else to ride her. That's just how I feel. Well with the exception of my first wife, when she left, I didn't care who rode her.

Oh and if I could go back in time, I guess I would get some sports scores and make some serious coin and retire.

cliffsta. you obviously feel strongly about this so I'm not going to sway you, but just to retort....I don't know where to start. Power isn't stored in reserve like fuel or a NOS can. When power is added to the bike it goes everywhere. Even if it only shows up at a certain RPM. The bike will just overall run better and it will get to that power quicker. And once you have it, you use it. Just like money. My bike never had top end when I first got it. Now it has plenty, guess where I have the tac at. Its on the top. Even in the woods. Your experience on bikes is limited my boy... and you have a lot to learn so I'll excuse all of that because you don't know any better. But just so you know, thats a pretty damn silly and naive comment to make. I mean, dare I say it, but thats almost Iowa guy material.

As for the EFI.....come on dude...COME ON!!! Carbs are not better. Even a 2 smoke bikes that don't have to be removed...and even in the few that don't even have to be turned, you can turn a nut off the bottom of the bowl and use a 6mm socket to remove the main jet. And even saying you didn't need to touch the needle or the screw or the pilot by the grace of God...just the main jet, thats still a pain in the ***. Plus the testing. With an EFI you plug it in...thats it. you plug it in. Let me say that again, you plug it in!! And thats just for large flow changes, it makes constant small ones by itself all the time to have the optimal changes. Again dude, come on, thats Iowa guy talk.

The only way a carb is better than EFI is if its not working right....obviously. As long as its functioning as its suppose to EFI is by far superior.

Look around you dude, see how many people are chiming in that they do indeed love their KLX, but if given the choice they would be riding blue. If you like your bike thats great, but as you said, it is what it is. Just accept it and love it for what it is and enjoy it. Don't brainwash yourself into thinking its something that its not. So I'm the one that really should be lecturing you, so I am

And retort about upsetting me, no you didn't upset or offend me. Like you said, I"m simply partaking in a lively debate here.

ride on.

To me, it doesn't matter what anybody says! I love my bike and I love working on it! I love the way my bike looks and I love the way it rides! I've ridden so many bikes and I've had so many bikes before! Maybe it's because this is my first dual sport. A couple of months after getting my klx, I bought a new 09 ktm 530exc and it's a bad *** bike! The ktm made me appreciate my klx a lot more! I'm actually trading my ktm in for the new zx6r soon. I can't imagine getting rid of my klx!

Im generally a fan of EFI, id be especially psyched if the user could plug in a computer and monitor in realtime and make changes in realtime, so te engine could be modded and then you could get the AF ratios dialed right for how you like to ride etc.. that would be sweet. Would give FI the tinker factor that we love about carbs.

I wonder if there could ever be an EFI retrofit, it would look and function like a carb but would monitor a few things to set the fuel /air flow. Like a FI that replaces a carb on a "normal" V8 engine.

You'd need sensors to monitor throttle opening, engine RPM, crank position, and the fuel injector itself.. It would read these sensors and then squirt the fuel in as required, when required. Might not be practical, but . cool idea perhaps.

there are DIY FI groups online, the biggest is megasquirt.. I believe they have a module for motorcycles!! not sure what sensors, injectors, etc they run with..

EFI is great, a proven system that is, I dont know what Kawi done with the 09 asian bikes but I don't here anything good. And Kawi is not new to EFI on bikes, they had an EFI 4 cyl street bike years ago. As a matter of fact if you look up the patent list on what just about every manufacturer uses these days it goes something like Bendex(US), Bosch, Nissan, Kawasaki, Mitsubushi. But if we want EFI and alloy frames we will have to pay the price. Plus better to wait a while till they get it figured out, if I have to fart with a carb 60 miles into the boonies I'm quite sure I can at least get it running, an EFI shuts down yer probably walking.

I'm just going by the dyno sheet posted at the beginning of this thread, and from my casual observation, the torque numbers are pretty much the same. The 10HP thing was a hyperbole. There is no spreading-out of this extra power that the WR makes. The HP difference is pretty high up in the revs. Its cool you ring your bike out; that's not how I ride. I ride tight stuff, squeezing between trees, going around tight turns. Even when we ride the 4-wheeler trails, I short-shift and keep the speed and revs maintainable. Different strokes for different fokes.

We'll agree to disagree on the EFI. I'd rather have an archaic setup that I know will work until the end of time than something far too complicated for me to understand. I miss having my 30 year old pickup truck because it had a distributor, a carburetor, and it just went. Easy to fix when it didn't. I have no clue how my Honda car goes. Is it faster and more powerful? Yeup. But when it starts to run like crap, I get to drop hundreds of dollars just to figure out something is broke that I can't fix. "As long as its functioning" is a rather large quantitative factor IMHO.

I'm not brainwashed. I know what my bike is; a beginner's bike that's street legal. The end. I have 0 desire to ride blue. I'll quit riding before I ride blue. I guess that makes me hard-headed but whatever; I'm a noobtard (since you went with the name-calling, "boy", dropping the dreaded IG references, whatever) but I've seen enough Yammy bikes and whatnot to know I won't ride one. I know I'm not as experienced as you, its unneccesary to throw that in my face every time we discus an issue. I know it going in, you don't have to make that point (rather sharply, at that) every time we participate in a thread. I come at it looking for advice from old hands. That's how I learn. I can't learn if I don't sound stupid from time to time. And I appreciate such discussions because that's how I discover the in's and out's.

The heart of this discussion (again) was about the WR and if it is 1000$ more bike. I still do not believe so. Maybe I'm wrong. But the whole extra 3-6 extra stock HP and the slightly better suspension would have been a waste for a beginning rider like me. By the time I outgrow this ride it'll be paid off and I can pick out something else. Long as its not blue.

The KLX is what it is a good 14 year old designed bike that with a capable rider can keep up with a Yami rider, not dissing the Yammi, have one in my garage. 3hp diff $500 parts spare 500 for big bore MSRP about the same. Want an alloy framed EFI KLX prepare to pay the piper..
