09 KLX250S Starter Mod - Electronic Start while in gear
Hello All,
I have used the search button and read through many mod compilation threads here, at ADVrider, and the KLX boards but have not been able to find a write up on how to modify your electronic starter to fire the bike up when it's in gear with the clutch held in? Going on my first dirt trip soon and don't want to worry about stalling the bike out on a hill and then having to put it in neutral and all that while on a steeper slope. I have heard it is a pretty nice mod to have done even for street riding for convenience factor.
Link would be great!

Easy
Unplug the clutch switch and short across it. It will think the clutch is pulled in all the time. Or you can do what I did and accidently break off the little pin while replaceing a clutch lever. This elimenates the function of the clutch switch
But if your bike is working properly the bike should start with clutch pulled in in any gear. If your bike wont start now while in gear and clutch pulled in then either your clutch switch is not makeing contact or there is an open in the wires/conectors.
Cheers Jim

My '06 would start with the kickstand down. Dunno if the kick switch was bad or not, but it went away.
Yes I have tried starting it in gear with the kickstand up and the clutch in while in gear. It does not work, and will not even turn over. Unless I am in neutral, there is no way to start the bike (even with kickstand up).
I am taking it in to the shop next week for some other work but would prefer to do this myself as it should be a very easy mod.
Again my bike is a 2009 KLX250S
Thanks for all the responses! Keep them coming!

I disabled my kickstand switch long ago by following the wires up under the seat and cutting them right before the plug connector. Then electicaly join the two wires and wrap in electrical tape.
Becuase I have had it disabled for most of the time I have had the bike I may be wrong but here is what I recall.
The function of the kickstand switch is to kill the bike if you have it running and put it in gear with the kickstand down. That way you dont drive off with the kickstand down then take a left turn and pogo the bike on the kickstand. So if at any time the kickstand is down with bike in anything but neutral the bike will be killed/not startable.
1. Bad Clutch switch. To check for this unplug flat black plug that goes into the clutch. Then take a small wire or piece of paperclip and short across the ends of the plug you just pulled out(Not the switch on the clutch) If the bike now starts in any gear with the kickstand up then indeed you have a bad switch. You can replace or just make the short a permenent mod.
2. If the above has no affect on starting charicteristics then you probably have a bad connection in the wires leading up to the clutch. You can trace them back and find the problem if you are comfortable with a multimeter.
