Default "Grease Trick" for Oil Filter Spring

I have changed the oil & filter once on my KLX250S (at about 25 miles - Motoman style breakin). That time, I laid the bike on it's left side in order to hold the spring in place while setting in the new filter. I had read about the "grease trick" to hold the spring in place during re-assembly, but I did not know what kind of grease to use. I know it sounds goofy. Grease is grease, right? Well, I am not willing to take that chance when putting something directly into my bike's engine.

With that said, exactly what kind of grease do you "grease trick" folks use?

Thanks,
Chris

I used a Bel Ray all purpose motorcyle grease that I've had for years. You can just as easily use bearing grease as well. You are only putting a very very light dab just to hold the spring. It will dissolve and stay in the filter anyway.

i just used standard bearing grease... dont think it really matters tho as ull only need a dab of it to hold the spring in place

I heard somewhere that plain old Vaseline is the best and will dissolve right away.

I held the spring in place on the filter with a length of dental floss. Set the filter in it's home, seat the spring, slide the floss out.

I just couldn't bring myself to introduce Vaseline into the innards of my new engine.

That's a dang good idea right there. Now I finally have a use for that floss that my dentist gives me every time I go see him.

Funny story - I saw a comedian talking one time about going to a dentist for a cleaning. When the hygenist asked him when was the last time that he flossed his teeth, he said, "you tell me, you did it". bah-dum-bum.

Seriously, I will be using the floss on my next oil change. I am with Jacks Dad on this one. I don't want Vasaline or anything else like that in the engine. I am too paranoid for that. Every little hiccup I would blame on that grease.

Thanks all.

Why doesn't Kawasaki just have the spring welded on the filter and charge another 25 cents each? I really think they dropped the ball on this one. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?
