New KLR650
Best bet is to take a motorcycle training course at your local dmv. I have riden klr650 for about 10 years now they are a blast to ride. I have a 04 right now with about 9000 miles on it. If you have any questions about the klr 650 feel free to ask. Depending what kind of riding your doing with the bike thier are some upgrades that you might want to do. Even now the bike is fine just the way it is. The only up grade i would do would be the radator guard, so just in case you drop the bike you dont bust it along with the fan, and the shift pedal if you drop it hard it will bust the engine case so some guys change the shifter with a better one or place a little rubber pad on the engine case just in case, I know becouse i droped my bike one time in the parking lot, i guess i for got to but the kick stand down and when i got of well whops. The next day i seen a drop of oil in my drive way. Thier was a litte crack in the case. Easy fix thow, some jb weld let it sit little touch up paint. I have some pics of my bike and some upgrades i did. I can email them if you like.

I have been riding on the streets for 24 years now and wonder why.
I will be getting a KLR650 as soon as I clear out some of the stabil to make room.
Check out some of the books ,publications.
Street Stratagies (spelling)
MCN=Motorcycle Consumer News
Proficent Motorcycling
And as Chris said ...alot of DMV have classes set up to learn.
If you could meet up with an experienced rider or two in your area so they could show you what to be looking for. Alot simpler since I could fill these pages.
Watch the SUV=stupid useless vehicles.

Ghostrider747,
If you've been off a bike for sometime, or if you really want to make your riding skills just that much better, check in your area for an MSF school. Or if you want a weekend of warm weather where you can ride, pack up and come to sunny Florida. I'm an MSF RiderCoach and I'll run you through the paces.
With your own bike, you can take the Experienced Rider Course - this is now eligible for license endorsement. If not, you can take the Basic Rider Course. I'll tell you this, either course will help make a much better rider out of you. Can you ride? Probably! Can you ride better? Absolutely!
It's a fun learning experience and I can guarantee you if you come to the school I work at, you will learn how to ride!

Hey Ghostrider747 listen to this dude Marty, he knows what he talking about. (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure) But seriously I have been on dirt and road for a number of years, and as Marty says we all have room for improvement. And besides its a chance to meet some fellow riders in your area. I am going to take the advanced course as soon as I can.
