Default Mikuni VM38SS question (KDX 450)

Hi guys,

1st time here. I took apart the carb (www.mikuni.com/pdf/vmmanual.pdf) on my bike as it had been sitting for awhile to get it ready for the upcoming riding season. Cleaned it all up and put back together. Turned on the petcock and I have fuel running out of the carb bowl overflow line.

Took it back apart as seemed like the needle wasn't sealing properly. I noticed that with the float bowl off and the carb sitting in an upright position/installed position, it appears the needle is sliding too far down and the float can't (easily) be closed by moving the float up. Almost like the tang on the float should be bent slightly to keep the needle from coming down to far. I CAN get the needle to close by turning the carb upside down and shaking it slightly. The needle slights easily in the bore. It just appears the tang angle is not good when the float is sitting empty with no fuel in the bowl to keep the needle properly seated.

This all seems a bit odd to me since I didn't change the float settings or anything else in the carb and the bike was running strong prior to teardown. Just a good cleanup.

So I think I'm doing something wrong but not quite sure what.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be welcomed.
