Default Battery Charging Issue

Hello All,

I have somewhat of a unique problem I'm guessing. I recently obtained a 2007 Mule. The engine runs okay and transmission seems to be fine, however, the battery does not charge.

As it turns out, the engine in my mule is not a kawasaki engine. It appears to be some sort of Honda engine, although I cannot prove that at this point. I have fiddled with it some and found that I can jump it off to get it started, once started it runs fine.

If I disconnect the battery while its running, it continues to run. However, with the battery disconnected, while its running, the voltage across the battery leads is ~1.7 vdc., obviously not enough to charge the 12 volt battery.

Appearently, the engine is generating enough voltage to provide a spark. I think this is done with a magneto.

So here is my question. Is there some way I can rob enough voltage from the magneto/coil/spark system to charge the battery while its running? I'm not sure if this can be done or not. Can I some how add a voltage regulator to accomplish this. Is that how it is done on say, a riding lawn mower?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
David
