ZX600 A Coolant Leak
Greetings All,
I have an '86 ZX600 with 25000 miles. It was a 'free' acquisition and looks like it was a stunt bike gone bad at one time. I like to tinker so I'm trying to bring it back to life. It runs but leaks coolant out of what looks like weep holes on both sides of the cyliner head. I'll check to see if there is water in the oil tonight (head gasket). What else would causea leak here? I've seen the message from ex5seeker posted on 3/25/07 but it didn't answer my question. I don't understand how a defective water pump seal would allow coolant to leak out of the head, above the pump itself.
I appreciate any help offered.
Thanks,

Thanks for reading.
I do have a beat o-ring seal around one of the water inlet pipe junctions into the head but that leak is easy for me to identify. The one that puzzles me comes from both left and right sides of the cylinder head, from what appear to be weap holes, about 3 - 4mm diameter. There are no threads in the holes. I can stick a scribe point into the hole about 2 1/2" and can feel what may be the curve of the outer cylinder wall with the scribe point.
The leak occurs when cold, and not running. When I fill the filler neck (overflow container not in place or hooked up), the coolant drips from these holes. When running, the coolant drips faster.
The outer water pump cover appears fine, but does have a small amount of scale at the inlet/output.
I suppose a pressure test is needed but don't want to spend $100 on a tool if I can help it.
Still stumped.

Ooops. The curve I feel with the scribe point is most likely the combustion chamber, not the cylinder wall. Also, there is no water in the oil, and I checked the inside of the outer water pump cover.

those hole in the side of the head are drainage holes for the spark plug wells. if you got the gas tank off and look at the top of the motor you'll see the valv cover with one or two big hoses going to it make sure those are tight.
