Default Valve Adjustment on a 500

Just curious if anyone has ever done one on a 500 or something similar. I was going to take it to the mechanic and have them do it, but they were too busy. So I'm contemplating doing it myself. I have a repair manual and I'm sure I can manage to follow the instructions. I'm just wondering if I'm gonna kick myself in the rear later on for deciding to do it myself. I'll probably do it when riding season ends - just in case.

And yes I am somewhat comfortable wrenching on stuff, so that's not really an issue.........I just don't want to mess anything up.

So should I do it myself or should I leave to those who know these things???? Thanks!

If you are decent at wrenching, take your time, follow the book and keep everything clean, I don't see why you'd have any problems. Just make sure you get the clearances right, that's the important part!

Thanks Caddy! The more I think about whether or not I should do it, the more I actually want to give it a go!

Here's a link on the adjustments for a 250. I'm sure it's the same as the 500.

Do the 500's use adjusters, or are they shims?

If they are shims, read NS post on his R1 and it would be similar to yours.

If it's like the 250, piece of cake.

the 500s utilize the adjuster style... like they said... piece of cake.

i've got a manual here and you can ask me questions if something stumps you.

Thanks heffay!! If I do it myself, I will definately ask you questions if I get stumped! Appreciate that a whole bunch! Heck I'll even do up a DIY.

Man I really want to do this now!!! I think it'll be fun! Just gotta get over the nervousness of the doing it.
