Default tore off speedo cable, advice needed

Hey everyone. Brand new here. Have been riding for years, I currently have a 2006 KLX250 and like an idiot used a bike lock on the front wheel and fork...was all set to ride today and forgot to take it off, got 3 feet and realized it, it was all spooled up in the axle...tore off the cable and exposed the sheathing by 3 inches, broke the drive gear and tore up the housing....

My question is can I just take off the speedo cable from the instrument panel and ride, or do I run any risk from driving with a messed up speedo cable drive gear still attached? Any info would be greatly appreciated as I just really want to ride and don't want to wait the week or longer it will take to order and replace the speedo cable and assembly. Thanks so much!!!!

Welcome to KF

I would take the cable off, tape up any openings and ride. Not sure on how "tore up" the housing part though.

Right on man, thanks for the welcome and the reply, I really appreciate it! By tore up the housing I meant that the plastic on the speedo cable drive gear on the wheel got chewed up a bit by the metal wire of the bike lock....

Thanks so much for the advice, I'm gonna do it up, I'm really glad I don't have to wait to relpace it to ride, but I do want to replace it, where would you recommend the best place to buy an OEM speedo cable and speedo cable drive assembly would be? I've been doing some surfing and can't seem to find the whole assembly, just the cable...I saw a few on eBay but they weren't specifically for 2006....thanks again for the advice and welcome!!

Hey dude. Was checking it out and gonna order, thanks again for the link, however I asked some buddies and one of them has the whole assembly for a 2007 KLX250, will it fit the 2006? Thanks so much!

I am not really sure on that. Wasn't the '06 and '07 the same? Have you asked this same question in the klx section yet?
