Stupid But Easy ?
If you're serious about this question, this is what I did: Ijust decided to figure out the gas mileage and then reset the trip odometer every time I fill up the tank. Just ride it until you have to switch to the reserve tank, fill it up noting the mileage on the odometer and then ride to until you have to switch toreserve again. After you've filled up again divide the number of miles driven since you last filled it by how many gallons it takes to fill it up and you'll have your mpg and also a pretty good idea of how many miles you can get out of a tank(in my case 200+) of gas. It only takes a couple extra minutes and if you keep track of yourmpg every time you fill it up you'll also get a better ideawhether different octane levels make a difference and whether something's going haywire with the bike or you've gota leak in your tank, etc.
You'll feel the bike start to stall a bit when it's time to switch to the reserve tank. You don't need to stop or anything, but when that happens just reach down and switch the fuel leverfrom onto reserve and then fill the tankwithin 10 miles or so(you'll probably get more than that out of the reserve but I wouldn't take too many chances -- it'sgotta' be amajor pain walking your bike back down the side of the road or leaving it behind while you try to find a gas station to bring some gas back to it)It wasalittle worrisome the first time it happened because I didn't know how far I'd get on reserve but I rode a good 10+ miles on reserve with no problem.
It really isa good idea to know how many miles you can get out of a full tank of gas before you drive off for a ride in thecountry onthe week-end. And once you know that you hopefullywon't even haveto switch to reserve.

LOL!
I've switched to reserve only to forget about it later on.[:@]Walking to the gas station really sucks when you're in all your gear, and it's 100F outside!
Like Chris says: count your miles between fill-ups, and calculate your MPG too if you want to go the extra step.
I do.
