Default Stalling when put into gear

hello everyone, I just bought my first bike, a 2003 Ninja 500R. Today I was riding it, i pulled over and put it in neutral to zip up my coat vents. Well I went to leave and it stalled out as soon as I put it in gear. The clutch was in but the engine stalled. I tried everything to make it work, let it idle longer, reved before hitting it into gear. Well I had no luck and was left stranded. If you have any ideas that would be great. I have put 1000 miles on it, it had 1100 when I bought it. So it really shouldnt be the clutch. I know how to shift, how to use the clutch. Well if you can help me out, that would be great. Thanks a lot for the help. Im at school now without a bike, so the sooner I know the problem, the sooner I will have a ride again.

Matt

Kinda sounds like a cable adjustment issue (first thought on it), welcome to the forums.

Only thing I could think, also. Maybe the kickstand killswitch came loose? Just guessing here.

Deuce, if the kickstand switch was loose, I would not think that the engine would stall with the clutch in.

Good point. I was really just throwing stuff out there. Thinking of things that could cause it to stall when put into gear.

I agree on the clutchadjustment. First, I wondered about the kickstand switch, too, Deuce, but he says it stalls as "soon as he puts it in gear." MTT, we're not suggesting you don't know how to use the clutch. It may just need an adjustment.
If, however, your engine goes smoothly into gear; no "clunking," or other oddball stuff, consider checking the kickstand switch circuit (not just the contact switch at the actual kickstand.) In the absence of a jumpy clutch, it does sound somewhat electrical in nature. My 2 cents.

I know on my last few dirt bikes, you had to give the bike a few revs as you dropped it into first, otherwise the engine would stall out. Never did figure out why, it'd happen even if you had a fresh clutch, and everything was properly adjusted.

the same happend to me on my z250, i found it was the kickstand killswitch, it was a bit siezed and the button kept getting stuck injust slightly so little thatthe warning light wasnt on or anything, a little wd40 or gt85 followd by a little grease soon sorted it. i hope this is helpfull to you and you solve the problem. baddersz250

yes as dragone and a few others has pointed out the Side stand switch would have nothing to do with the clutch, does it do it as soon as you click it down, does it seem harder to go into gear than before?
