Default problem shifting

I have an 86' Ninja 600.

I can shift into 1st, but not into 2nd or above.
I took off the shift cover, and everything looks fine (per the chilton manual)
It seems that when I try to shift into 2nd, it will go in(neutral light goes out), but it won't latch.
It stays latched in 1st just fine.
WTF?

Check the gear selector/shifter placement .. Could be misalighned not allowing proper upshift !

Guessing at this ... Set it in the neutral pos. Pull the lever off ,rest it level or just down from level to the foot peg , then ckeck the racheting action... You should have a little more upshift motion ...Try it I had an old VFR1000 intercepter have a similar problem...

ok-
I pulled the shifter off and tried a bunch of different positions with no help.
As I said earlier, all of the shifter parts look good. Both prawls are held to the drum by the spring. The drum looks okay.
Could this be caused by the shifter detent?

Thanks for any help

Of course, but I'd rather not tear the bike that far apart if someone has a better idea.
That's why I'm on the forum.
Know what I mean?
