i put my new battery on my zx7 and tried to fire it up and still nothing happens except a buzz comming from somewhere, but, when i hook up the battery charger, my bike starts up . the volts read 12.4 before i even hooked it up. any suggestions?

 

You did precharge the battery per the instructions? All cells are good (fluid). I know that you listed that it had 12.4 volts prior to hook up.

 

i charged the battery for an 1-1/2 hrs before hooking it up. it turned over a couple times then nothing. now i have a charger on it, but it's not starting up unless the charger is hooked up to it.

 

could it be my starter, starter relay or alternator? don't know, just throwing solutions out there

 

I've had that problem before.. when you first purchase a battery, the battery needs to be charged 100%. I've heard when you first charge your battery it "remembers" that as the full state so if you charge it 50% (due to being rushed, etc) it'll only hold charge for that 50%. I only had it in for 2 hours and it kept dying on me. I had to buy a new one.. charge it 100% (4-5 hrs) plus some more then put it in. I don't know if that's the same issue, but just throwing it out there. Gluck!
