I have a 79 KZ750 i bought it a few months ago the person that had it liked to tinker and added alot of lights and also melted a few wires in the process. The problem I am having is with everything else unplugged when I plug in the headlight or tail ligh the main wire and fuse connector gets extremely hot. I was wondering if anyone new if the regulator/rectifier might have something to do with it I have not started the bike to test it but I did check the resistance and it did not turn out the way the service manual said it should. The resistance should have been less than 20 ohms one direction and more than 100 ohms the other but both ways were above 200 ohms. I have experience working on cars but bikes are something different. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It does not sound like a reg problem..... I would lean more towards a bare wire, a short somewhere, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the reg only active with the bike running?

If you have experience working on cars, then a bike uses relatively the same principles... Trouble shoot the wiring as you would a car's wiring. Break out the multimeter, and start checking circuits, until you narrow it down to a wire or faulty part.

With everything else plugged in, except the head and tail, it's all okay?

 

Yes it's fine unless the lights are plugged in. When i got the bike none of the lights worked because the previous owner melted the four pronged plug that connects them to the fuse box. I have all the wires untaped and I can't find anything but I will look again. I was able to ride the bike when I first got the lights on but it never started right it would drain the battery.
