Default Kawasaki mule 550 with electrical issues...

hey folks,
ok, here's what happened...
tried to start the mule and got a clicking sound. eh dead battery, put on a charger for half an hour and tried again. nada
walked away for a little bit and heard the mule trying to start itself. wha?
ran down there disconected the battery leads, smelled rotten eggs and saw
the battery was smoking. double wha????
picked up a new batterey, installed a new starter and solenoid, as well as a
new voltage regulator. mule started right up. yeah!
checked battery with multi meter and found it was showing 16.8 volts.
huh? should be around 12.5 idle/14 or so under load.
so my question is what should i check next?
bad charging coil? i would think the new regulator would be doing it's job.
what would cause the the system to overcharge like that?
any feedback would be great. i don't want to run this if it's over charging.
i did have the battery disconected for a number of days and the voltage
never dropped. not sure if that means anything but thought i would
mention it.
thanks in advance for any replies.

yeah, 16.8 seems pretty high. You already changed out the regulator. I do not have a manual for this ride to check against. I always thought that 14.8 ish to the battery was normal. No answers here for ya, but welcome to KF.
