Default HUGE STARTING PROBLEM!!!

So I bought a used 95 zx6r the other day from a provate dealer for 800 and there is a bit of a problem. The bike starts soemtimes, but most of the time when you try to start the bike it gives the effort but will start to grind. I got a New starter motor thinking that was the case...Nope... Others tell me its the flywheel. Please, all feedback is welcome:-)

Default RE: HUGE STARTING PROBLEM!!!

it's probbly the one-way clutch.. not actually the flywheel, persay.

it's an assembly with about a thousand tiny *** little cams and springs that act like a sprag clutch, permitting power transmission in only one direction, but has the ability to instantly freewheel once the motor fires up. this is how a bike starter gets away without a bendix.

i know for a yamaha 660 raptor, they're about $220. had one in my shop last year.. couldn't even guesstimate a price for yours.. might get lucky tho.. a used component from a salvage yard may suffice, given it's in decent shape, and regular oil changes occurred on the machine during its life.

sadly, thats almost impossible to tell.

there should be about 10* or less of backspin before locking. it's unserviceable, so you pretty much gotta replace the clutch unit. theres no replacement cams available.

hopefully you won't need the whole friggin flywheel.

oh.. and welcome to KF!!
