Head gasket on 80 KZ 1000
Looks like I have a small oil leak coming out of the head gasket right under the far left exhaust pipe (If your sitting on it). Is this an easy fix? Does anyone know what would be involved in fixing this problem? Thanks for any advice.

if your head is warped, it will need to be decked, but basically its a unbolt, shave and replace granted it didnt cause any other damage to anything else. are you sure its a head gasket ? usually water will leak out if its a head gasket.
I'd be shocked if water was coming out, the bike is air cooled.
Its an old OHV in-line 4 cylinder. I replaced the gasket on the top cover last year, now it looks like the gasket at the bottom of the head is leaking. I'm not sure if I can just pull the whole assembly above this gasket off, or how complicated that might be.

damm, who knew, i didnt
same thing though, if its warped, deck it and replace the gaskit. while its out check the cylinder walls and if its tore up get it bored out and drop in a new piston. its not hard but being i dont know the motor i cant really give you a how to. can you get a repair manuel on it ?

My question is if I can pull the whole top assembly off in one piece or if I have to tatally disassemble the top half of the motor. I don't really want to have to pull the cams and all that out. I don't want to have to pull the motor out of the frame or mess with the pistons at all. I just don't know how this motor is assembled.
thats why i recamend a manuel because i dont know the cam set up or where about anything is. if the cams and the cam chains and sprocket is all part of the head idont see why you couldnt, but like i said i dont know the motor. post some pics of it if you can.
Hard to say, but like any over head cam motor the timming chain will have to come off... When was the last time that was replaced? prolly good time to figure things that need to be replaced while your in it that fare so ya dont have to do it again. You shouldnt have to pull the cams just the timming chain unless you have to resurface it , then it needs to be striped, And this would be a good time to get the head preassure tested and check the valve seals or guids.
Can all that be done with the motor still on the frame? I'm selling this bike to a friend, I don't want to put more work into the bike than it's worth, but I don't want to sell them a problem either. Far as I know everything is as it came from the factory. The bike has about 35K miles on it.
I dont know if ya can leave the motor in, cause I've never done one b4. But most likely the timming chain and tensioner will need replacement. I know that cars timming belts are due at 50k miles. Its up to you... you can get away without it, but it is recomended....Maybe work out a deal with your freind to go in on parts tell him you'll fix the headgasket and that if he wants the other stuff maybe he'll help.
