Great debate: K&N vs BMC
I have always been curious as to the BMC filter claims. So I decided to set out on a search to find hard numbers, actual proof to the claims for K & N, and BMC.....Myself, I have always been a K&N fan, and I run K&N in almost everything I own, including my bike. So, if BMC is that much better, then I would want a BMC, right..
Well, I could only find one Dyno chart so far for the BMC filter. And the bike lost 3 horsepower with the BMC. The reason for the HP loss is, it is the street version filter and not the race version. http://www.fireblades.org/forums/hon...ir-filter.html
Now, I know it is not a real tech article, but does anyone know where to find more info? BMC's web site offers nothing. BMC just started making air filters in 1995. Anyway, there are two types of BMC filters...1.) race version. This filter is not recomended for street use bikes. It is the highest air flow filter anyone makes and is only designed basically to trap the rubber particles from other racer's tires. 2.) The street version. The street version BMC filter actually only flows about the sam CFM of airflow as the stock filter. According to BMC, no remapping is required for the street version. So, it is basically an over priced stock filter.

I know some of these articles are not for Kawi's, but they are for bikes in general.
http://www.hardracing.com/BMCAirfilter1.htm .....Just another article saying the BMC race version should only be used in Racing applications only. http://www.knfilters.com/powertesting.htm An article from K&N showing actual test procedures. http://www.motorcycledaily.com/21sep...andnfilter.htm This is an article of actaul dyno HP gains of 5.2 hp on a motorcycle with the K&N. http://www.durangoclub.com/faq/Performance.html And another article from an independant testing company of the K&N corralting coarse grade dust and saturation points. http://www.transworldmotocross.com/m...183032,00.html And yet another article of real world testing done on the K&N on a motorcross bike.
Now, I am not trying to knock down BMC. And I am not trying to sell K & N. I could care less about either one of these companys. I just want what's best for my ride. So, bear with my intellect here, lol, BMC= Racing only....K&N= Street Use with a Slight HP gain.
To summarize...BMC makes two different filters...1.) Race only,2.) Street which is an expensive stock rplacement flowing filter. K & N makes a useable everyday filter, with added filter protection.
Am I missing something here peoples?? From every little bit of infi I can find, the K & N is the best choice for street bikes and the BMC is the best choice for Racing only bikes. I am not trying to start a flaming session, just trying to find the facts. What do you all think??

RE: Great debate: K&N vs BMC
Wow..I actually found a real good tech article on the BMC....Finally. And the bike lost 2 horsepower with the BMC installed..
http://www.rc51.org/dyno/bmc.htm
There is a lot of info online, so check it out..Maybe one of you all can find something that I am missing?
So, I guess I answered my own question. Which is better?
K&N dyno sheet = 5.2 hp gain
BMC Dyno sheet = 2 hp loss..
I guess I will stick with my K & N !!!!

RE: Great debate: K&N vs BMC
Yup, I agree...K & N has been doing it for what, 30 years....They do have an advantage there!! Funny thing is, I figured the BMC was going to be a lot better, but if you read the second post, and the real world testing of the BMC, it is disappointing. Oh well, I willl stick with the K&N!!

RE: Great debate: K&N vs BMC
K&N here as well, or you can always spend the extra on the BMC lol.
I went k&n on the bike because the maker of my jet kit did testing before he sells his kits and you get the right kit for the right mods that you have, Ivans rocks. I have even called his shop and talked to him personally, he customer service is second to none.

RE: Great debate: K&N vs BMC
You know, I had heard the same thing...But I found out they are two seperate companys, and are not associated with each other. All though, I am sure BMC wishes they were!! lol
